65 mini Richard longman race engine "clutch

Have been trying to get the clutch adjusted so gears don't grind geting into gear. Tried everything in the book in all early cooper manuals. Can't get the clutch to let me put it in any gear. Have lightened fly wheel and brand new slave valve . Any ideas would help. M. B.

I knew someone who had the same issue. An experience Mini mechanic did lots of adjustment without luck, so it eventually went to a specialist shop. They discovered that the arm for the clutch pedal inside the cabin was bent, so it just didn't have the necessary travel to release! Once changed it worked just fine. Hope mine never does that! Good hunting.

clutch adj

Have read in 2 or three places where the clutch has to be disengaged before making the adjustments by pushin in the clutch pedal. Are the adjustments Made with clutch pedal in or out when making adjustments? Tried everything that was in the seven how to still no luck. Looking through the timing hole i can see the clutch plate move back when pedal is pushed in but still won't let me put it in gear. Would a longer pin from slave to arm be necessary? any suggestions would be helpful befor tearin into clutch.

Now have you put in a new clutch plate or is it just the slave cylinder....you can ajust the clutch throw by undoing the 2 large nuts on the center of the housing then get someone to depress the clutch pedal while you undo lock nut on ajuster bolt 7/16th bolt 3 turns then relock try changing gears if still grinding reajust...if this does not work you may have a bent arm this will mean removing the arm pivot spindle and applying heat to arm and rebending it a little inwards to make up slack.....

clutch

Will Bleed slave cylinder again as I might not have all air out. New arm so probably not bent. Have followed all other instructions on stop and large nuts. Will keep trying .

I have an adjustable slave arm that helped this on mine. it seems that some new clutch discs are thicker or the throw arm will not disengage it... try this if all else fails, take the throw rod off or pull the pin and take a small 1/4 in socket that will fit over the end and then pull the rubber back, push the rod through.. put the socket on the end and let the socket sit on the piston.. if the extra length helps, you can get an adjustable rod, I had a small socket like that on the face of my slave for a number of years.. worked perfectly, but finally upgrade to a longer throw rod.. some might argue.. but worked for me.
