Check the how to link that Bram posted. I believe you need to disconnect a motor mount and jack up the motor. Be careful, when the Mini dealer did mine the motor slipped off the jack. It took them hours to get the deformed pulley off.
Place the floor jack under the center of the engine with a block of wood to distribute the weight of the engine and also to protect the oil pan. Raise the engine until the pulley is more accessible.
Please read this step by step instructions. Fig #9 shows the engine being lifted high enough to gain easy access to the pulley.
