R56 Sunroof Rattle- want to avoid a whole new sunroof!

Hello from the UK

I thought i'd post on NAM as you guys always seem to be very knowledgeable about technical issues.

My early 2007 R56 has developed a loud and annoying sunroof rattle- happens over the slightest bump and Im pretty sure its just the rear glass rattling.

When I shut the car door I see the back edge of the rear glass briefly jump up slightly.

I went to the dealers today and they took it for a test drive, they think some of the guides in the casing have had it and I need a whole new frame as they dont do any repair kits/parts.

Anyone on here had a similar issue and managed to bodge it to shut the sunroof up?! It operates ok apart from wind noise but I think thats a common issue.

Any help/suggestions would be great!

Many thanks

Your symptoms are the exact same as mine. The fix was to replace the whole sunroof cassette. I questioned the back glass jumping up at the rear when closing the door and was told that this is normal, even after the repair was complete, due to where the glass is hinged. Sorry I have no fixes for you but wanted to share a bit of info.

Usually when this happens, the sunroof needs adjustment. If you look at the TSBs available on the forum, more precisely SIM 54 01 07 and make sure your sunroof is correctly adjusted you may avoid a new module.

My sunroof had a little whistle on the freeway yesterday. It's the first time I noticed it, but it was one of the windiest days in a long time so maybe that had something to do with it.

There are four torx screw holding each piece of glass in place a simple adjustment to these shoud fix your problems with either wind noise or rattle.

Would a simple adjustment be a little tightening or something more complicated?

Probably just shift the glass a little so it makes better contact with the seal. That has worked for me in the past.

If I can find the torx screws I'll give it a try - thanks!

Make sure the tracks are greased too...if dry, they sometimes bind and rattle.

There a six of them not four and they are T-25 NOT T-20 as the rest of the interior screws. I say this, because you can destroy the head if you use a T-20.

What you should pay attention to for good contact are the front and rear lips. The middle you can ignore, as there is a secondary seal underneath the glass panel.

Also pay attention to the revised specifications: the glasses should not be flush, but with a small slope, like a spoiler. So the front lip should seat 0.5-1mm under the body, the rear of the front panel 0.5-1mm over the lip of the rear panel, and the back of the rear panel 0.5-1mm over the body. This helps deflect the air and reduce the pressure on the seals.

Last year I had the rear sunroof motor replaced under warranty so I would have thought they might have adjusted everything then. I'll give it a look and see what I can do.
