R50/53 Crankshaft reluctor wheel
Crankshaft reluctor wheel
Has ANYbody seen the crankshaft reluctor wheel break apart? A large piece of my '03 S is missing and damaged the crank possition sensor in the destruction.
Wierd...... Just curious?

Not the pulley on the front. This is what the crankshaft possition sensor gets it's reading from. It is a toothed ring that is bolted to the crankshaft inside the engine. The sensor is a Hall effect sensor,(magnet?) and as the toothed ring goes past the sensor, it fluctuates the magnetic field allowing the ECU to know where the crankshaft is in the 360 degrees of rotation. There is a 2 tooth gap to give a larger spacing for timing reference for -0- degree reference. In a nut shell.........
Sounds like somebody forgot to loctite at the assembly plant! Never heard/seen one break apart.

Cool, never really knew the actual name of it, always just called it the Crank Position Sensor Ring, lol.
Anyway, I have to agree, unfortunately you're the first one I've heard of with a problem.
(Edited my post, sometimes I'm just not with it, thinking Crank Sensor, picturing Cam Sensor....don't as me why....

The 3 mounting pads and bolts on the crank are still there as seen through the CPS opening, the reluctor however is broken apart.
So, I wonder what 'lil surprises I'll have once I've dismantled the engine..... Still have compression and oil psi..... So...... In to the depths I GO!!

Number 7 in the diagram. Correct.
Referred to as "impulse sending wheel" by MINI. "Reluctor" is another term looks like used by other manufacturers to describe it.
Had not heard of one failing like that.

Set to the right in the picture.

Good luck on install.

end play?
Well, untill I can get the engine out and on an engine stand, I'm guessing that the crank end play is excessive and the reluctor wheel touched the block.............. Should know soon. I'll be looking for witness markes on EVERYTHING near there......
Well, it took 3 years but I installed a low milage '06 into Buttercup.....added an Alta 2% pulley to the crank and a couple of other little things......runs very well........
Yup... life
Runs really well.... JUST IN TIME FOR NORTHERN UTAH WINTER!!!!!!
Timing is every thing......
