Got a card from my dealer - wants to buy my car
This is a little weird. I received a card in the mail from my dealer (really poorly worded but that's besides the point) essentially saying they really really need 2006 S models and he had an 'aggressive offer' for me.
Is that a standard tactic to get me back in for a new one, or is there really a hot 2006S market out there?

Well, less people are buying new cars over the last few years given the economy, which means the value of used cars has gone up. That said, the dealership still needs to sell new cars. If you've bought a car from them before, I know most have some system to remind them every few years to get in touch with you and see if you're interested in a new one. Sounds like they went through their list of previous customers and what they bought to add some personalization if I had to make a guess.
Now, if I was to buy another one, it would be a 2006 again, too

It is a standard trick...
Makes you go to the dealer thinking you are going to get a better trade-in....
Reality is, ANY WAY they get a person to walk in the door of the dealership is an opportunity to sell....
Kind of like when they mail out keys, and tell you to visit the dealer to see of it starts a car to see if you won it.....

I have received the same junk mail also. One for my 2005 Dodge Caravan and my wife's 2005 Dodge Magnum RT. Run Forest Run!

Agreed....common sales tactic. They don't want your car, they just want you in the door.
The latest one I've seen here in Indy from the MINI dealer is a mailing that at first appears to be a printed off email with handwritten notes on it from a salesperson claiming that their manager directed them to contact me specifically and immediately because they urgently needed a supply of 08 MINIs on their lot. It's very obvious that this is a mass printed mailing and the signatures are printed along with the rest of the text on glossy paper.
Besides, I drive by the dealer every day to work and they have a lot full of used MINIs that aren't selling. They don't want my old car....they just want my money.

The dealers want R53's. They have plenty of used R56's but the Supercharged cars are considered to be the best vintage (a more grassroots enthusiasts model) and their value is rising. I'm not saying this is not a typical dealer promo, I'm just saying that there is an R53 used car shortage.

No walnut shell BS, no timing chain shenanigans, no warped fake intake scoops. Bullet proof engine and gear box. Between me and the shop the goal is to keep this one going 'for-evah'.
after reading this we are definetly keeping our R53 forever as well.
we are looking at getting rid of my saab and getting into a roadster as our second car.
on the dealer offering to buy your car, it can sometimes be a legitimate offer not just a sales tactic. my parents had a toyota 4runner at one point that their dealer offered to buy for years and finally got from them for what they asked for it. this also happened with their passat.
if someone comes in wanting a specific car and they cant find it at another dealer they will check with the owners in their books and see if someone has the exact car

Back about 8 years ago we had a six cylinder VW Eurovan we had purchased 4 years earlier. It had the pop top sleeping area, which we thought was cool but in the end never used. We show up at the dealer and they offered us more than we had paid for it. The Euro had gone up VW had stopped importing them and they had a list of customers. It was a once in a life time car deal.
So far, the roadster appears to be pretty reliable. I've seen very little about specific problems showing up like the melted bonnet scoops and cold start issues we have come to anticipate at the top of the forum list. And, it has very good curb appeal.

Thanks, y'all! (This is only my 2nd time with a dealer-bought car so I forgot how sleazeball they can be.)
Just look at the circumstances. Do you think the dealer is really, really anxious to buy your 7-8 year old car?
Well, I wouldn't go that far. There may be some demand from real enthusiasts who are specifically looking for an R53, but their numbers are also very small.

If they didn't put hard numbers in the letter (I've gotten two of those with an explanation things that could subtract from those numbers such as miles and condition) then it's just a tactic to get you into the dealership. I've gotten two letters that gave a trade-in value. Those are more of a real deal unless they find reason to subtract from that number.
Agree, get them all the time in the mail referencing my specific vehicle. The fact is they sell our trade-ins at auction - they don't really "need it". They need to move their new in-stock inventory which is heavily floor-planned.
You proved you would buy from them before, that makes you a qualified sales lead. But, no, there probably isn't a real market for exactly that car at a dealer since anything older than 5 years is a tough deal to finance.
Today at the ADESA "dealer" auction in Phoenix 7 Mini Coopers went through, one was a 2006. That means a dealer was not able/willing to sell it to JQ Public,...

Yep. And even better if it's a full JCW car. My '06 cab will be with me a long time. And it hasn't even hit 65,000 miles yet. First track day coming up in a month.
