Do I need new rims if I get rid of my run flats

I have pretty much decided to go with non run flats when I replace my tires. Always hated how the car handled and don’t want any added expense if I can avoid it. I have looked into going with non run flats quite a bit, but wondering why I still read that you have to change the rims also as regular tires will not fit on run flat rims but most people don’t mention it. Any truth to this at all.
I currently have the original 195/55 R16 tires on a 2009 copper S convertible.

Not unless you want to change wheel size.

So long as you get a tire made for the same size wheel, then there will be no issue. There is no such thing as a wheel made specifically for runflat tires, or non-runflat tires.

We did the same thing on our MCS, but also switched to a much lighter rim which made a big difference in the performance characteristics.

Good luck

There is such a thing as a wheel made for run flats, but that's a different system. MINI uses ones which fit on regular wheels. There's no issues changing to non run flats.

No not really unless you want your MINI to look that much better.

You have any more info on this? Cause this is the first I've heard about such a thing....outside of the tweel and other similar systems, but those are less runflat and more airless.

I think Honda's PAX runflat wheel/tire setup is one where you can't just mount non-runflat tires to the original wheels. Glad MINI didn't use that system!

They seem to be called "Auxiliary Supported Run-Flat Systems". Don't know who makes them.

you do not need to change wheels to replace runflats with nonrunflats

if you are still in doubt, contact a tire profressional, i suggest Alex at tirerack.com

Got rid of my runflats today!!!!!!

Have been researching all week about what tires to get.
Got 15,000 on my original set of runflats. Also told I would have to replace rims. (which turned out to be BS.) I have a 2012 coupe s with optional 17" rims. Practically needed to wear a mouth guard to ride in the downtown streets of Baltimore with the runflats. Replaced today with Continental
205/45/R17 all weather Extreme Contact DWS non-runflat tires @ $116 a pop from TireRack. Delivered next day . Install with balancing etc. $99.
I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM DRIVING THE SAME CAR. Runflats just suck.
Mini wanted $400 a tire to replace with the same crappy original runflats.

Nope, just have your tire guy pull the runflats and put your NON RF tires on.
The rest, balance etc....is just like any other NON RF on any other car...

Getting rid of my RFs was the BEST thing that I could ever had done for my mini....
