R50/53 Anyone ever have to have their sc rebuilt?
Anyone ever have to have their sc rebuilt?
I was wondering if anybody has had their sc rebuilt at autoxcooper before and how much was it just getting curious my mini has 92k on it and I just put a 17% on it
Suggestion....
He was a vendor here for a bit...
was generally well liked, so no qualms with him.
But my suggestion, is GET THE FULL PRICE UPFRONT.
I HAVE heard of a couple people that sent one in, then needed"extra" work, at extra $$....(maybe he has changed his pricing structure...).
Most rebuilds are usually a flat rate or even an exchange to limit downtime....
So just ASK what is included in the price......Most places do the gears in the SC, if needed for free.....
IMO, just stay clear of SC tech of old-town fl...these are very cheap rebuilds, but many folks have had them fail in a year..they were warrantied, so they DID replace them...but you are out the labor and loss of use.....
As for how long it will last....they are good till they fail...
Oil loss of the PO is the main cause of death....but they DO lose efficiency as they wear, and make less boost....so replacement time can be subjective unless the PTO or snout bearings fail....

NO STATE SALES TAX..so even if the law does change...
We offer rebuilt superchargers. With both ported and non ported options.
I wouldn't spend $1200 on a rebuild, that is too close to the price of a New supercharger that we have for $1500

I've gone threw two from Supercharger Technologies in Florida. DO NOT use them.
First one self distracted at 17k miles and the replacement they sent me WAS BAD. This is costing me $$$$ so please find a different place. I just ordered one from Way...hoping for better luck on this.

Since we are talking superchargers, I have over 96k miles on mine, and it's never been touched or serviced, so I have no way of knowing how much fluid is left or if anything is going bad. All I know is that it hasn't made any strange rattling noises or anything out of the ordinary.
Is it necessary to service it, meaning replacing the seals, topping off the fluid, change the water pump, etc?

Necessary? Not unless you've lost fluid. As you say, unfortunately there's no way of knowing. The simplest service is just pulling the SC and draining/refilling the lube front and rear. If you have little oil in the rear, you might want to then pull off the water pump to check the condition of the gears. You can go as far as getting the whole thing rebuilt. It's really a judgement call/crap shoot.
Some SCs have gone 150K or more, others crap out at 60K.

+1
With over 90,000 miles, i might just run it till it goes...or till hear a funny noise....a rattling chain sound...then get it rebuilt.....if i was NOT going to diy it...the cost of paying a 3rd party about $100 per hour, the savings for most is not there...but for a diy, might be worth it.
One thing to consider....
The lube GOES LOW FOR A REASON....it has gotten by the seals....just refilling it might only return the sc to service for a short time...lets face it....NOBODY KNOWS if the lube just slowly tricled out , a drop a month for years, or suddenly got worse towards the end....
Now lets say you need to change a waterpump cause the weephole is showing leakage...then i would look at the SC, and might even consider an early replacement based on miles/age, or just a relube!! Most of it is a gut call, with a bit of guessing thrown in!!

I'm planning on a different pulley down the road, which means it might be better if I service it for longevity sake.
Remember...the rotors on the SC do wear...it is a wear item, and boost will drop overtime...the snout bearings, etc are all kinda wear items, thats why they get rebuilt.
But if you lube it, and can get another 50k from it, guess it might be worth it.
Lube is available from gm, and the gaskets are sold in kit form by waymororworks if i remember right...just play it safe, and get a second waterpump gasket/o-ring. Many folks can tear it on install, then you are kinda stuck...waiting for a new one.

To bump up an older thread, I have replaced my OE R/B unit after about 80k miles. The first (original unit) one went out at 45k and I got it covered under warranty (hence the r/b unit). That one lasted until around 135k. I previously bought a used one of e-bay in case the dealer wouldn't warranty the original unit due to my pulley. When the r/b unit failed, I pulled the e-bay one out of the rafters, cleaned it up, swapped pulleys and installed this one (it's when I realized that water pump mount ear was broken...thanks e-bay). So I swapped the PTO drive off the r/b unit, added new oil and hoped for the best. 1 year later, yup, PTO failed (after 95k miles). Now I want to rebuild the SC, and looking at the prices, Supercharger Sales and Stiegemeier are both priced about the same (but Stiegemeier will rebuild mine) and WMW is about $100 more. Money IS an object for us, but I really do not want to do this job again anytime soon. My car has nearly 150k miles with no other issues (well, clutch time). What is your guys 2 cents on the subject, who do you trust to rebuild your sc? Sorry for the long post, but the tow truck just dropped off BB into the garage and I got to start tearing her down.

I've got an '04 R53 S with 116k on it. I bought it from a good friend about 2 months ago and love it to death, but even in these first 2 months with the car, I've noticed the supercharger doing a lot more hissing, squealing, (unpleasant) whining, and screeching. It's loudest when I give it a bit more gas than is required for cruising, and seems to calm down once I get close to flooring it, and the sounds are completely silent when I am just cruising along. This has gotten worse over the past week or two. Should I start saving up now, or should I have started earlier?
I think it's the original sc, and it has the 15% pulley.

Have you changed the belt? Screeching is not really a sound I would expect from supercharger. Whining is the sound everyone likes just google Mini Cooper s and go to YouTube and you can hear what everyone is going for.
Google belt squeal to hear what I think you are describing. If the belt had stretched it would definitely slip and squeal under load.
Give that a go. Another good way to see if it's the belt slipping...go out and give it a rip and reproduce the squeal...pull over and touch the belt if its hot like really hot and hurts to touch...it's slipping.
