Timing chain issues in first gen. Minis

After reading all the posts about timing chain/timing chain tensioner issues with the MCSs I was wondering if the same problems exist in the first gen. justas? I'm looking at a 2006 justa with 66,000 miles. Should I be concerned about timing chain problems?

Nope.
A few sporatic folks...often after a rebult motor/head that included machining (out of specs, chain ended up long) or just a random failure...nothing out of the "ordinary" for a normal car. The 2006 (gen1) has a totally different motor, from a different factory, built by different designers, built on a different continent, built from cast iron, rather that aluminum alloy....has nothing in common with the FRENCH peugeot motor other than the mini label and some black paint!! I guess they both burn gasoline.....and should both have their oil checked regularly!!!

But Brazil is in South America.....(former home to the TRI-TECH engine plant, where our motors were built)....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritec_engine
In 1997, Chrysler Corporation and Rover Group (then a subsidiary of BMW) formed a joint venture called Tritec Motors to design a new small straight-4 engine. The new company built a factory in Campo Largo of Curitiba, Brazil specifically to manufacture the new engine.
When BMW broke up the remains of Rover Group in 2000, BMW kept the stake in Tritec Motors as the engine was in use in the Mini range which BMW had retained. In 2007 BMW sold its 50% stake to DaimlerChrysler and cancelled its contract for the Tritec engine.[1] BMW entered into a new joint venture with PSA Peugeot Citroen to develop the Prince engine which is used in the second generation Mini cars.[2]

Huh??
the MINI as opposed to the classic Mini is a different car...
The 2002-2006 hardtop is the first gen...
proven to be pretty durable, strong and well understood. Basic.
perfect, no, solid and tolerant to folks modifying it yes...there are many 225 hp cars, and some 250 ones around...
overall, the Gen1 MINI is not honda relilable, but mine has been pretty darn good!! The 05 and 06 years seemed to have the best builds before mini switched to the new desgin, with new issues....
For the 3rd gen, mini will be bringing the engine desgin/building in house.....

One tip...
You are looking for a non s from your post, i think, a "JUST-A" AKA, JUST A COOPER, and in general those have always been pretty darn relilable in comparison to the S. Generally, the owners abuse the non s cars less....

Don't forget on the convertible until 2008 was also still considered 1st gen.
