Hi all,

I'm about to replace my brake pads on my 2010 MCS. I did notice there were wear sensors on the coopers. However, I have no clue, if I should replace these or not.

Are these sensors disposable ? Each time I change the pads I need to install new sensors ? Or are they reusable ?

Or are they reusable only if I don'T use the pads enough to damage the sensors ? If that's the case, how can I tell if I need a new set.

I'd like to know if I should get replacement sensors before getting into the job.

Any help will be greatly appreciated !

 

When the brakes start to wear these sensors also wear and tell the computer when the pads are worn half way and then worn out. You should replace these anytime you replace the pads.

 

as long as their holders don't break then you should be able to re-use.. only neeeed to replace when the light goes on.

I zip tie mine as im running a BBK up front and go through my brakes on a regular basis.

did you get a warning light on the dash?

If no - then your sensor is probably intact and can be reused (if you can successfully get it out of the pads)

The sensor sits in the pad well back from the surface of a NEW pad. People who watch their maintenance issues often decide to change their pads long b4 the sensors get consumed.

A consumed sensor must be replaced (or jumpered out .... I find them pretty useless and by-passed mine)

{consumed = the warning light came on cuz the sensor contacted the rotor and eventually was worn down enuf to break the wire inside. The open circuit created causes the warning light to come on as this is SUPPOSED to happen when the pad is at minimum thickness. To turn the warning light off you must re-establish this circuit by either replacing the sensor with new, or tying the two sensor wire ends together to fool the system <aka a bypass>}

 

On that car once you wear half way through the pads you HAVE to replace the sensors even if the light isn't on. No way around it on these newer MINI's

I've dissected a worn sensor and fail to see the circuitry mentioned RE the gen2 sensors ... perhaps I need to dissect a virgin?

(this sensor is off my 07 which I changed out to EBC green pads about a week after they became available.)

First time my brake warning came on I visually inspected my brakes and reset the 'counter' cuz I had plenty of pad left ... lite went out

I drove another several thousand miles and the lite came back on (counter or sensor?) .. and decided it was 'time' so I replaced the pads. Which WERE still serviceable. I reset the counters (again) and jumpered out the sensors (and went thru the reset) the car was happy . . .

This entire brake sensor thing on the GEN2 has never REALLY been explained IMO. Lots of "I think" and "I saw" ... all I can say is what I have experienced working on my cars and those of a few folks who come to me for (free) service.

K so I guess this light would'nt go off and if I still don't see it I guess it never went on ? Because I'm not the first owner of the car. I guess I won't take any chance and replace them.

Must not make a difference but I'll be installing Hawk HPS instead of OEM pads.

 

you guys have recommendations on where to get pads from for a good deal?
