Raising (yes, really) my R53. I need advice!

Hi everyone,

I moved to California and the roads to and from my work and school are really bad. My car is only a few inches off the ground as it is due to lowering 5+ years ago, but additionally the suspension is pretty shot. I don't remember what is on there now, but I would really like to raise my mini like the Dsquared "HIV fundraising" mini cooper. (Google...) They raised the Chassis and put all season deep thread tires on it. However, I haven't found a mini modder near me. So, to the point: I need someone to give me some advise on what parts I should order, some do's/don'ts, and any other information you think would be helpful so that when I go into the shop I know what to ask for. I want to do it correctly so that my car can take the rough roads and ridiculous miles I have been putting on it with less wear and tear. I'm willing to put the money and time into it, I really want my car to live forever! (Tee hee). I would be very grateful for any advice! Thanks so much

Do you want it to be tall or do you want it to ride well?

Getting it above stock ride height requires some custom fabrication that may be pretty simple but just might not be necessary.

To get it to ride well, get Koni FSDs, stock springs, and non-runflat tires. Replace your strut top mounts and front control arm bushings if they are old and crusty, which they probably are.

This will ride better than stock, and probably handle better than your lowered car that has no bump travel.

Stock springs and FSDs will actually raise it just a little over stock. It will also provide a better ride and better handling as well.

I second the recommendation.

Those don't add any bump travel though, so they won't improve ride quality. You just get clearance.
