HELP!! Please...

My 2007 mini cooper is leaking, what i think is coolant. I have had to fill my coolant up twice in two days. I am stationed in Germany, so I am going to have to do the work myself, which is fine. I have a little puddle underneath where the engine is. I am thinking it might be my water pump. but i need some suggestions before i order the part from auto zone or bmw.

Check the thermostat housing as this is a common problem on your 2nd gen MINI's. Here is the part number just in case you need it. Thermostat part number: 11-53-7-534-521. Just make sure you get all the air out of the cooling system. Sometimes it can be tricky. Keep an eye on the level on the coolant tank as it may drop a little until all the air is removed.

Here is a thread on how to change the thermostat if that is what you have leaking: https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/how-to/211246-how-to-r56-thermostat-housing-thermostat.html

As Braminator said, it is a very common problem and I will be changing my thermostat today.

Ok. So I have changed the thermostat housing and thermostat. However, the fan is still coming on after I turn off the engine. What could be the cause of that? I need help with the problem?

It can be normal for the fan to stay on depending on how hard you drive your Mini. The real question is does it stay on

Yes. It will turn off after 10 to 15 mins after the engine is turned off. So what's up with that

My MINI used to do that on hot days in the summer, but if it's cold you might have a water pump issue at that point. My fan only would stay on in the summer for 1 or 2 minutes(finally bought a FMIC).

Good luck!

How would I find for sure if it is the water pump?

What would be signs if it was both the water pump and thermostat? I have fixed the thermostat but now the fan is staying on for more than 10 mins. The weather her is cold. So I am wondering if the problem now lays in the water pump. I have no indicator lights on.

Did you install the thermostat backwards or upside down by accident? If you did, it might not be opening up right or at all, leading your car to get really hot while it runs and thus requiring the fan to stay on after the car shuts off in an attempt to cool the engine off.

Can you verify that water is flowing through the radiator or expansion tank? Did you refill and bleed the system appropriately (easy way to check that by making sure your heater blows hot air). Also when bleeding it helps to have the front end of the car raised.
