Replaced Brake Pads at 16,700 Miles

Took car in for Service . The replaced the front brake pads and rotors at 16,700 miles. About half of the mileage was highway. Thought that seemed way too soon to need this service. Any thoughts ?

Also have had the steering lock up when leaving parking spot three times . Last week the steering had a hitch in it when turning parking lot. They could not find anything . Kind of concerns me as it is the steering.

Well you got them for free under the maintenance agreement so I wouldn't worry. But yes, that's pretty early for stock pads.

Yes I was happy it was covered in maintenance but if I have to replace pads and rotors at that rate, it will be a lot of money every year.

I have owned several BMW's . Even they lasted for 35K.

~30K. That's about where my old original pads wore out with daily driving.

I just had my rear pads replaced yesterday at the dealer 28.5K miles, looking at back services the fronts were changed at 13K. I didn't realized commuting would be so tough on the pads. So that means my interval for changing pads will be frequent. Lots of money at the dealer. Yikes!

Why at the dealer? Brake pads are an easy job to do yourself... Unless you're getting them for free under the maintenance program, it seems like DIY is a great way to save money there. And you can use aftermarket pads like the Akebonos that people around here seem to love, which produce much less dust than the stock ones.

Next go around I'll do the pads myself. ....I wasn't sure because the maintenance light went on. I thought it was oil but it was the rear pads.
