Yes that is what most do. What year and model MINI do you have? Have you done other mods yet? Reason for the question will help us MINIacs help you.

Wait wait wait.... Buy a cat-less down pipe (or header) and weld a stock (or any) cat to it? Why the hell would anyone want to do such an silly thing? It removes the advantage of a free flowing down pipe. Am I missing something here?

Buy an RMW street header. No codes, more power, better sound.

Some people found out that the Mini like to kill aftermarket cats If you're all out for performance, the stock one might not be the best flowing available, but if you are more concerned about emissions and CEL, then it is a pretty good choice.

Then why waste the money on an aftermarket DP/header just to constrict it with the OEM cat? Just keep the OEM pipe.

Why not do other mods first, like the pulley. Its the most bang for the buck. IMO there are a lot of other mods to do before doing the header.

On a Gen 1, many many other things unless you're just looking for sound.

It's a 2006 Mini Cooper S I don't know what the previous owner did that it only has one pipe coming out on the side, Instead of In the middle. I don't know much about it. I haven't really seen the bottom. Besides I don't know much.

I have a Rmw stepped race header, so far I am very happy with it.
If you get all the other parts but the pulley you wont have lost much power with the stock pulley and you will have a happier car in the heat.
The RMW headers get rid of the huge torque drop off after 4k on the stock manifold.
i haven't used anything else so i cant tell you what others do....
Cam is also a good option. all depends on what you want to use the car for.
But yes Minis are very destructive on exhaust components in general.

What about a chip?
Our cars have an ECU that can be reflashed. Try Jan at http://www.revolutionmotorworks.com/

Our cars are drive by wire and you can help the response by adding one of these http://www.sprintboosterusa.com/ or by having it done when you have the ECU reflashed.

Do a search on these and you will see lots of answers to these questions.

Just for the record, there's more to header performance than just the cat, so a good header with a stock cat will outperform the stock header.

Play close attention to the primary ports on the flange and the primary tube diameter. There is at least one 'performance' header that has smaller flange holes than the exhaust ports on the cylinder head. This will kill your power.

Screeching halt!!!! One pipe exiting the rear on the side, not dual pipes exiting the middle of the bumper? I'm not a Gen 1 guy but this doesn't sound like an "S". I could be wrong. Gen 1 guys?
