R60 Persistent Foggy Windows
Persistent Foggy Windows
Hi all,
I feel bad even bringing this up considering some of the bigger issues other have had with their CM but I was curious is anyone else was having a problem with the windows constantly and consistently getting foggy? Whenever I have to drive with the windows up I always have to de-fog.
Does anyone know what this usually indicative of? I live in NY where the average temp has been about 42-47 so far this winter. I keep the inside temp at about 72-75 except when very cold I will crank up the heat until comfortable and then shut it down.
Thanks

We don't have this problem in our cars (Clubman and Roadster). We have the auto A/C and always use it in full auto mode. This way the A/C is always enabled and the car uses it to get rid of the excess humidity.
Like pjv1k says, are your carpets and/or floor mats really wet? Do you have a sunroof that could be leaking somewhere that you can't see? Is there water under the trunk floor where the spare wheel would be?
Turn recirculate off and the AC on.
Recirculate off will pull in fresh crisp air from the outside instead of reprocessing the humid air from inside the vehicle.
AC on will dehumidify the air from outside.
My windshield and side windows do get foggy when it's snowing, but it clears quickly once everything is adjusted as above and left on auto mode.

The above should solve the symptoms. Just check around for any moisture...just to be safe. After the gym or a rain event my CM will fog up unless I do the above.

With any car in the winter if the heat is on recirculated air must be off. Fastest way to clear it up is with the ac. If you have the controls set for heat by your feet, enough comes out by the windshield to keep it clear. I run about 66 or 68 temp. and it stays clear.
The A/C will condense the moisture out of the air, and the heater will warm up the now dry air.
Alternative is to stop breathing, but that has bad side effects.
Turn the auto climate control on....and make sure the snowflake button is ON. This keeps the air conditioned and keeps the fogging away. I used to turn the snowflake off in colder weather, and I got the fogging windows.
Definitely no water in the matts or anywhere else. I also keep my can in the garage so it's not usually sitting in the rain. I usually always keep the air on a pass thru and not the cabin recirculate. It's just weird that I always have to put the air on the or else the fog builds up. I figured this would happen more in the MC hardtop since the cabin is smaller and body heat/ breathing would have more of an effect. But I didn't really have that issue much. Only in the CM. Strange.

i keep the fan on 1 click up and the airflow turned all the way clockwise so the air is directed to all the vents ... the fan makes no noise when set like this and the windows do not fog

So, if I'm driving with the windows closed, I always have the fan on at least one notch up on the dial with no fogging problems.

interior fogging
I'm in NJ and as soon as it started to get cold, the windows fogged badly. They also fog VERY badly when I'm drinking coffee and it's cold out.
I've never owned a car that fogged this bad in the last 50 years. I assume the real reason is the windows are thinner than my previous US built cars/trucks. Maybe they conduct the outside temp and interior moist warmth condenses quickly.
I LOVE my Mini Countryman S A4, so for the slight inconvenience, I don't mind. I run the defrost as needed. (recirc on/off makes no diff at all)
