Navigation & Audio Pissed off x 1000000 at the screen

OK. Forgive me for what may potentially be long, and is definitely a rant. I will try not to use bad language.
The nav system has finally made me so angry that most of my brain wants to give the car back. Nav was one of my 3 requirements for a car this time (manual, nav, cute/little). I am about to buy a freakin' Garmin with all the bells that this one doesn't have (i.e. all of them).
Ready? OK.
1. Camel's back broke today when I went to a part of town about half an hour away that I'd never been to before. It took me directly there (who knows if it was a sensible route, though), but on the way back it wove me through all kinds of neighborhoods I wouldn't want to be putzing around in if I knew where I was going.
2. I missed (once again) the turn onto the highway because it doesn't tell me what road to turn on until I'm 400-800 feet from the turn. If I'm in the wrong lane, I'm kinda f***ed. Even in Arrow view, I can see there's a "right turn in 2 miles" or whatever, but it doesn't really help at that point. I also can't see more than one turn ahead, so I have no idea what route I'm going. Highway? Dunno. No idea.
3. I thought I'd try and outwit the thing by zooming out, but the little measuring line that says "400 feet" or "0.25 mile" or whatever the range is--covers up anything on the map you're trying to see.
4. You can only change the volume of the voice (which I don't ordinarily use, but hoped it might help) while giving a voice command, any of which I haven't learned yet. I managed to turn her up while saying "redial" and then not dialing anything, but she goes so quiet anyway that I can't hear her even over soft music.
5. I can't tell what the name of the street is that I'm currently on, unless I'm in Arrow view, but I want to be looking at a map. I can't do both.
6. I can't tell what music channel I'm on while it's giving me directions.
7. The 'go this way' line is white. The map is light gray. Not easy to discern.
8. Punching the address in pre-trip is more trouble than it's worth. Around here, there are lots of sub-towns. Not everything is Baltimore, there are dividing lines (Reisterstown, Owings Mills, Pikesville, if you're familiar) and since you have to put the city in first, it'll tell you there's no such place. You have to make sure you know the entire mailing address or you can't move on to street name. Hit the wrong button and you have to start all over again. I just got rid of an Acura TSX that let me type just the street and number, and then it asked me which of the towns I wanted, if it came up in more than one. Also, it had a touch screen with the keyboard laid out instead of this joystick with which I can't program unless the car is stopped.
9. Another reason I got a new car was to finally have bluetooth. Nobody can hear me if I'm going more than about 45 mph. I still have to use a wired headset (I don't trust the BT headsets, they don't work either). This may be because of road noise, may not. Who knows.
10. I seriously could go on, but I shall stop here.
If anyone knows of a reason, knowing my directional challenged little mind, that I shouldn't buy a fancy-*** Garmin with lane assist, split screen with nav+direction list, etc...I'd love to hear it.
Once again, PLEASE forgive my goings-on. But please also--any, ANY advice is truly appreciated. I wish I'd saved the $1750 (connected is useless also) and gotten a $300 Garmin. The cuteness of this car (2013 S Coupe, picked up new 10/6/12, 2800 miles on it now) isn't worth the nonsense. Is it?

I'd get a Garmin. Everyone seems to love them, and no one EVER seems to like factory nav. Personally I just use Google Maps on my android phone in the rare event I need directions, but if you really want an in-car solution, Garmin is probably your best bet.
Get a good Garmin, with the lifetime traffic updates. Not the cheaper, but close to the top of the line. You won't regret it. The traffic transponder is a little box in line in the wiring, and you position it so that it sits up on the dash. It will show you what traffic is ahead, how fast it is going (green, yellow, red) and alternates. It shows you what lane to be in for your turns, and it tells you two turns in advance. ("in 300 feet, turn left on Main Street, and then left") I LOVE that it speaks the names of the streets. I set mine to use the British male voice and it amuses me and keeps me entertained. You don't need the zip code, and if your city name is not correct, it will give you the closest ones to choose from, much like your old unit.
You can also speak your requests, but the voice recognition is not as good as the iPhone's is.
Good luck!

That should be right. It was a present from hubby so I don't know for sure, but if it has the lifetime traffic (so no sub. to pay) and lane assist and street name, that is it.
If you end up really liking it, watch Amazon for the lifetime map updates to go on sale.. I bought the lifetime updates for $60 on sale, so I can update my Garmin maps twice a year for the life of the unit, for free. :-)
I use the dash disk to adhere it to the dash and then the little suction cup holder clings onto the dish, but you could also get a holder for somewhere else. It doesn't QUITE fit in the Cravenspeed scissor holder that goes behind the tach, the Garmin just a snidge too big. (that scissor holder is good for iPhones etc) I also ran the plug wire from the cig lighter, under my dash behind my knee guard, up along the drivers side of the dash just where the door closes, and onto the dash. That way, you only see a little cord from the cig lighter to the dash, then from the dash to the unit. Easy to do and keeps the cord out of your way.

Are you in split mode or full screen ... look at you settings . it does make quite a difference.
Also it sounds like you may be in 3D mode . try "Map" (I like "in direction of travel . not north) ...I find that easier.
Have you gone to settings and set your travel preferences? ie fastest , shortest, avoid freeways. ... try the settings "shortest" is just mileage ... I usually use fastest.

COR BLMY--
Thank you for taking the time to do that.
--I've been using split--but split mode doesn't give enough information. I really need to know the turns ahead, not just the next one right before.
--Color settings: will look for that one.
--Direction of travel being better than Perspective/3D--but at least 3D allows you SOMETIMES to know what street you're on...I've tried them all, hoping for something I've missed...
--fastest/shortest/etc--I don't have "avoid freeways." I would like maximize or minimize them, but my choices are fastest, efficient, shortest. Even with the book it's not clear what's what.
--That's great that yours calls out the street name--mine doesn't. It will say if it's a number ("route 29") but not if it's a name. And I don't travel on interstates/numbered roads all that much. What year/model are you?
Oh and CB--thanks for not calling me ignorant...

Remove the OEM Nav, install a new Chrono Package instead to fill the void.
For me, smart phone with app sending directions to my MINI visor mounted blue tooth device works better than my Garmin. Besides not having to pay for updates which are always at least a year behind.......I can verbally ask for places/locations and it takes me there. After using both simultaneously, I found the app in the smart phone better/accurate.

Mods, this should be in 2nd Generation section...
go with the Garmin, and get the ecoroute HD, you'll be able to get all the gauges and more info than you need, but it's fun -- also the hands free bluetooth phone option works great.
I worked with MINI Connected for quite a while one morning, with my MA, before I ordered my MCS. I ultimately passed, thinking it was a bit clumsy switching between apps (from MOG, for example, to something else, and back) and that it was iPhone centric (I'm on Android about half the time). I didn't get as far as evaluating the Nav function. I spent the money on my JCW tuning kit instead.
Great to see that someone had suggestions to allow the factory system to work better / provide better results than what the OP was experiencing.
I bought a Garmin nuvi 2595LMT, and share it across two cars and one motorcycle (it isn't weatherproof, and I keep that in mind on the bike). Voice activated, fast, interface is pretty well organized.
I gave up on smartphone GPS'ing after one last fail in a limited-data-service area where the phone couldn't load map info (there are a couple of smartphone apps that load their own maps, a few GB worth) and preferring the speed and user displays on the Garmin. Is nice to be able to call out, "Hey Garmin!" "Find gas station" or "find rest stop" or whatever and it works. Almost always...
It's as reliable as any Garmin is, meaning a) it still pays to have a general idea (from a map, for long trips, particularly) of where you're going and what route would seem reasonable or best to get there, b) it will sometimes send you ways that work, but wouldn't be what the locals would suggest, and c) you'll get the rare "WTF" result. Thankfully, you can preview the route to double check, again point "a)" comes into play.
But yes, I get it that factory navs can be vexing. Our 2007 Corvette has a very inscrutable one; fortunately, some forum member wrote a guide to help...60 pages.
I'm having enough trouble learning the vagaries of the standard head unit (this button does that, unless you're in *this* mode, where this button now does *this* instead, etc.).

Garmin nuvi 2595LMT
With the Christmas sales all going on, this is the unit to have, I too think, for under $200. Looking for a cheap android phone to to pair the EcoRoute with. The guages are more than we have in a stock configuration already. I've had Garmin for years and nothing beats them though fallible.

I have a dedicated Garmin Nuvi, that I swap around from RV to Harley to Mini. However I also installed an iPhone app from Garmin called "StreePilot", that would download as you go the roads, and that worked well until you got someplace without data service. Now Garmin has discountinued that app, and replaced it with "Garmin U.S.A." It downloads 1.4 Gigs of data to your phone, and it basilcy becomes a high end Garmin Nuvi. It operaties the same, but has a bunch more features. Also Google has released Google Maps for the iPhone (since apple switched to tomtom for their service) I used it driving around Denver, and it worked very well, and it is free.
Both will do voice navigation. One thing interesting about the Google Maps app, is that it sent the audio out Bluetooth, where as Garmin sends it out as normal audio. What does that mean to you. In my mini, the voice would stop my music in the car, and then tell me the turn info, then the music would start again. The car just thought I was getting lots of phone calls. lol
One note with both phone apps, plug your phone in for power, and don't use the mini usb connector, as it will handle your phone as a music device. If you use a cigarette usb power adapter, then the car doesn't know your phone is there other than the Bluetooth connection. Just seams to work better. your mileage may very.

I am not sure why you can't use your phone. I have a Razor Maxx with a mount on the dash, Bluetooth on the sunshade and I don't get lost. I have the choice of using google maps, great maps or Verizon's own map set up also very very good.
If I get a call the gps goes silent but will beep and flash when it is time to turn or???? Also it will tell you ahead of time to be in a certain lane so you don't miss your turn. best thing, you always have your phone eith you.

Nuvi 3790 for me, with all the bells and whistles - I love the lane assist that tells you which lanes exit or turn and the pic of the exit... voice command is not perfect but useable...
I mounted it at the top of the window just left of the mirror, hard wired it in to the center console (with a seperate swich since I couldnt find a switched powersource) and all the cords are tucked away (I hate dangling cords) - I even went with a tint strip across the windshield so you dont see the black circle from the suction mount

Thanks all for the Garmin suggestions and everything else. The ones I'm down to from researching are the 2595LMT and the 3590LMT (didn't realize there was a 3790, will check that out as well).
Seriously, thank you for listening, sympathizing and assisting.

I'll chime in. I hated the NAV as well, until I got more used to it. You already know the user interface is odd and non-intuitive. I found that until I got used to it, and had more practice, that I needed other ways to get around. Leave extra time for backtracking, enter the address in my iPhone ahead of time. Leave enough time to get through the process of entering an address. If you're rushed, and haven't practiced, then you're going to get mad.
I've been looking for the volume setting - that one tripped me up several times, couldn't hear what the lady was saying. And the NAV should tell me what cross street is coming up, which this does not do very well.
I admit I bought a Garmin after I missed an appointment due to this thing. But I have to learn how to use yet again another device, which doesn't make me happy.
I think I like my Prius NAV better, but really it's that I'm used to it.
