Mini cooper Black Rims?

Hey, so i've been considering on getting black rims for my mini cooper. And i recently spoke to a guy who had black rims on his mini cooper and he said to NOT do it, he said his tires blew and he had to spend 750 on new tires and that you won't have run flats anymore? and i was just wondering if this is all true? I own a 2008 mini cooper

The color of the wheel has nothing to do with blow outs. Sounds like the guy you spoke to put regular tires (non run flats) on his new black wheels and they didn't last. I know most people, including myself prefer regular regular tires to run flats for a softer ride and a quieter one too. Why that guy had a blow out, there's no way too tell. Probably ran over something that caused a blow out, or had the wrong amount of pressure in the tire causing sidewall failure. If you want black wheels I say go for it! It is up to you whether to get regular tires or run flats though. I'd say the only con with black wheels in general is they show brake dust more than other colors...

Two things here. This guy had tireS blow? The only way I could imagine this ever happening is if the tire build was sub par or defective and the weather conditions were the worst on earth (130 degrees+).

I say go for it. My wife and I both have black wheels on our MINIs.

Hers

I have non-runflats (BFGOODRICH g-Force Comp2 215/25/-17) on mine and she is still running the Perelli runflats (205/40-18) on hers.

Oh wow the one that is all black is amazing! How much were your rims? and also where did you get those headlights? I'm interested in changing mine from the original stock ones!

I don't know where you heard to have to replace tires when you buy new wheels but seriously does that make any sense to you? If the tires are the correct size for the new wheels and in great shape why would you not use them? Tires can be dismounted and remounted without hurting them.

Its been easier to buy new tires with new rims. I've bought from TireRack and they offer no charge mounting and balancing if you buy both the rims and tires from them as a package. The new wheels arrive and they're ready to mount.

I've also swapped tires around and never had a problem with the new tire/rim combination.

The wheels are the RSe05 (17x7.5 +45offset) from NM Engineering.

You can also order them from Way Motor Works.

The headlights are custom units made by Performance Auto Solutions (Black Flame Customs). They do cost a bit, but they are well worth it.

It sounds like that person may have bought some defective wheels or had them improperly mounted. If you buy from a reputable retailer or oem you shouldn't have any issues. If you're running 16" wheels/tires I'll be selling mine soon which are from the factory and have had zero issues.

Here's a pic.

I'm thinking about starting the asking price $400 or best offer. I noticed oem wheels don't last long in the market place so I'm not really sure what the exact market value is.

Did you have to buy new TPMSs too so that they'd be ready to mount?

Nope, they make rebuild kits for around $10-15 per wheel. It's always recommend to buy the rebuild kit because removing the sensors can damage the rubber o-rings.

OMG this blackout thing is killing me. I know people like it, but man, I can't stand that look. Sorry. I will never understand the appeal. All I can think of is teenagers blacking out their Honda Civic.

If you're reusing the sensor, then you don't get them ready to mount and its just as inconvenient and expensive as buying lose tires.

In my case the wheels were supplementing the existing wheels (for track use), so I needed sensors in both sets.

Thanks Purie and Btwyx. I just bought a set of wheels/tires from a local club member. They're off a Gen1 (I have a 2011) so I'm swapping my TPMSs to the new set, so it sounds like I'll need a rebuild kit too.

The new rims are black so this isn't a complete threadjack, just a little detour.

I agree if your buying a wheel/tire combo already mounted. But if just buying wheels then rebuild kit makes more sense. Don't you need to have the dealer pair your new sensors up to your car? Also from my previous car you couldn't run 2 different sets of sensors because of the pairing issues, l assume this wasn't the case for you? Lastly was their a dealer charge for pairing the new sensors? If so then rebuild kit using your already paired sensors would be ideal.

Hopefully this sheds some light for others.

Cheers
