I do the same ...unfortunately I'm taking a cruise after Christmas and the car will be a week at the terminal lot where they usually pack you in pretty tight...I'll be taking my Challenger (which I protect more than the MINI)...last time I got a nice door ding that cost me $600 to fix...it was right on the side crease...
IMO if I saw those on a car I would take a picture of it and text it to a few friends who would appreciate and understand why I would have giggled out loud when I saw them.
I vote no on those obnoxious things. But to each his own.

Well I live in the Bx so a lot of people here don't give a crap about how well you take care of your car. In rural areas and better neighborhoods there's a respect for others things, not around here. I would rather pay a few bucks now than pay a few hundred in repairs. I also do the long far trek to a secluded parking spot but that doesn't always work. I was even sitting in my old Honda once when a person opened their door and put a nice ding in the crease. The answer they gave me was "oops sorry, it happens."

Everywhere I go I park at the end of the lot with NO ONE around...and when I get back to my car there is almost always the worst looking car in the lot parked right next to me...

Those look like a pain in the rear and goofy. To avoid dings just be careful where you park. In 30+ years of driving I can count on one hand how many door dings I've gotten. None on my current Clubman S in 45k miles.

Also, I was wondering if I could place this magnetic number 37 on the door when parking.
Here's the link for both:http://www.roadstersolutions.com/page54.html
I wouldn't leave them on while driving because I would worry about them flying off the car, although I haven't had any problem with the magnetic stone guards.
Id rather have them look ugly than have dings. Too late already came in and rocking them on the car as we speak. New guy parking next to me at my co op, I gave him the "careful with your door look". Its been a week but he has kids and I know those little bastards are guna be flying doors open lol. I will try to take pics, they almost cover the whole side of the car. Its not like Im entering the car in a show with these on. Just wana keep it dingless for when I do.
I am fortunate in several ways. My wife was very proud of her new Mini and I fed that fire. That got her started on parking in the back forty. I drop her at the door and walk if I am driving.
She has a new Mini and I have her old one. I have 5 dings, 2 rock chips, and a scratch my mom gave me with her cane. You can't hold a cane and open the door with the same hand, even with 3 tries.
Lots of parking lots have little islands in the lots. I park as close to the curb and line up my wheel with their door. I think it helps.

The only place I can see using those is in a situation like the opening poster...if I were parking for a time in a tight lot. How do you know where to put them? Depending on the door of the car next to you, its hard to say where it would hit if it dinged you, right?
they are ugly but if they do the job!!!
I agree that they are ugly as well but living in NYC I do know what the OP means. I have seen only one car with those on so far, and if you leave your Mini or any other car on any NYC street without a bumper bully or similar people do not care on how many times they have to hit your car in order to fit in a parking spot, they will hit you even when they know that you are in the car, yes in NYC you seat in the car for a while due to the alternative parking rules.
Also when the taxi cabs let people out of their cars the make sure the pull over a close as they can to another car so when the passenger opens the door the ding the car right next to them. I had a dent from a yellow cab 3 years ago on a car that was 1 day old I saw when it happened too
.
I think that this method takes a bit of time to put on and off if you want your Mini too look new longer I guess is not so bad or a magnetic guard like the one shown before should also work.

Dings and more......
For those who park on the street I found these interesting.

Also these BumpShox

Basically a thing to add to your license plate if you parallel park.
Keep an eye on your car with Blackvue now with 2 channel front and rear.

Or we could get real ugly with these.

Get a Mini Fini trailer hitch and then add one of these babies.

For me I drive a S Coupe and I have the clear bra. I do have to park in a parking deck but fortunately I opt for the end of a row. And I always park up on the 7th floor and by the back wall. Meaning I have to walk the length of the deck to the stairs or elevator.
Park high up, walk, not much activity around the car at all. Deck is safe and has security. Cars appear to only get broken into if things like computers are left on the seat at the lower levels.
Think about it. Who wants to break into a car and run down seven flights of stairs? And don't leave valuables in the open.
The DoorShox seem ugly but might not be a bad idea just in case I find I am parking in the odd situation. Rare. I normally only drive the car to work. Other errands I have a beater car I drive like to the grocery store.

They aren't pretty, but I agree with the OP. With the smooth sides of the MINI, dents are all the more conspicuous. Like the other posters, I usually park in an end spot and walk. But for the times when you don't really have a choice, an ounce of prevention, etc...

In the Boot
Always nice to have something in the Boot just in case. I normally know where I am going to park. Always good to have options.
The driving makes me more nervous. So I am adding Blackvue front and rear dash cam for added comfort.
I have been using a free App as a Dash Cam on iTouch that is pretty cool. There are a few options out there to hold an iPhone to your dash. One is on the this site.

Nice dash mount. Another is here. Just $4.95

Incredible how these hold an iTouch or iPhone. I also put it on the passenger visor held by two elastic hair ties from my daughter.
Dings will happen, but in the end I have piece of mind because I have done all that I can reasonably do.
