Power Steering Pump Fan

Guys,

Have you guys replaced your power steering pump recently? If so, what was your mileage on your Mini before replacement? My 04 Mini is at 102K miles, and it's still on the original power steering fan. I wonder if I should replace this thing now or I should wait?? What's the longevity of this fan??

Thanks,

J

Historically, the fans seem to crap out much more often than the pumps because they're so exposed to the elements. A little road grit into the fan bearing, and that's all it takes.

At 102K I'm surprised you're not already on your third fan. Are you sure it's still working?

Keep the fan running....about a $200 item...
But run the pump, about $600 till it fails....
A good fan will extend/prolong the life of the pump....
sand and debris often damage the fan...causing it to stop....letting the pump run hot...leading to failure.

Do you buy just the replacement fan or you buy the whole assembly (fan & bracket)? I found brand new replacement fan for about $120 or $200 for the entire assembly (oem).

On an pre 2005 mini, the fan is rivited to the bracket....
10 seconds of drilling, and a couple screws will mount the new one on the bracket....newer cars come screwed together...so it becomes a convience issue....and a $$ issue. In mid 2005 the new fans started coming with a box of sometype just before where the fan plugs into the cars harness...thought to be some typpe of thermal fuse.

I normaly check the fan/clean it with a bit of compressed air when i do oil changes every 7500 miles....i also run the oem fan duct found on 2006+ cabrio's....it keeps the fan from getting trashed by sand/debris.

+1 on the fan duct. After using it my fan has gone close to 50,000 miles. Did an oil change Sunday and the fan was turning effortlessly.

Checked on my power steering pump fan and the radiator fan tonight and it's appear that both fans are working great and spins freely without any hesitation.

The previous owner must have replaced the fan before I got it (-:

Thanks guys!!
