Keeping up with a S2000

Hey guys,

I own a stock 05 Mcs. My buddy has an 06 S2k with intake and exhaust. I am curious if its possible that my Mini can stay with him or keep it competitive? I don't want to lost street-ability and day to day driving mannerisms. I was thinking of doing an Alta intake - Alta 17% supercharger pulley kit and Alt exhaust. Will they be a good start or is my goal fruitless ?

Thanks,

Quick google search yields vehicle weights as:

S2k: 2,864 lbs, 240HP
R53: 2679 lbs, 168HP

I think it might be a tall order, but I'm no expert. A lot will depend on who's a better driver, too.

Mostly looking for straight line speed. Would be nice to pull hard against him or keep up.

I'm not really knowledgeable on power numbers on R53's, but I do know many are pushing respectable numbers with pulley, intake, exhaust, headers, tune, and so on. It's gonna cost you to keep up with your buddy. Just wait until winter and race him in the snow, you'll blow his doors off

The S2000 is a very capable sports car. It won't be competitive unless he's a really bad driver.

Even if you modded to have comparable power, you'd still be at a huge disadvantage with FWD.

I have test driven a handful of R53s and R56S's. They were quick but I wasn't inspired to ditch the R50. I drove an '06 S2K two weeks ago, and it was the most fun I've had behind the wheel, and it pulled like crazy at 7,000RPM. If it wasn't $26,000 and a horrible colour, I would have driven it home. Great car.

That girly-looking car really cranks out 240 horses?

237HP, 162lb-ft TQ. Not so girly now, is it?

I'm not a huge fan of the look, but after driving one I really didn't care. It is a very fun RWD roadster. VTEC might be a stupid marketing gimmick, but once it "kicks in, yo!" you really do get sucked back into the seat. It's awesome.

I'm assuming that's a Sport edition, right?

And no.... nothing girly about that power output.

I'm no S2K expert, but to my knowledge there is no sport/non-sport variant, it just is what it is. I'd really like to own one, when it's practical to have a RWD car with zero storage.

They're hard to find unabused and unmodded, I understand.

A quick read on Edmunds reveals you are correct. Glad I never challenged one of those at a red light.

Having driven both an AP2 S2000 with a catback exhaust and owned an R53 with pulley, intake and lightweight flywheel I can tell you if I put a GP intercooler, header and exhaust on the MINI they would be pretty evenly matched. The S2000 might get you on the launch, but it doesn't have **** for torque until around 6K RPM. S2000s are pure sports cars, not drag racers, so they'll destroy the MINI in corners as long as the driver doesn't get the back-end out. Wouldn't be too difficult to get an R53 up to par with an S2000 on the straights.

The torque numbers show a different story
R53: 162 lb/ft
S2K: 153-162 lb/ft (depending on F20C or F22C) I know an 06 would be an AP2 but I'm not 100% on if its an F22C or not...but I'm thinking it is...
An intake and exhaust on his car would have a negligible increase in torque, if not a decrease depending on how free-flowing the exhaust is.

I think the setup you're describing you should at least be able to keep up...but that's just my unprofessional opinion. I'd be curious as to see how a race between the two would pan out.

Motortrend's 05 R53 test yielded a 6.5 0-60...I forget what the 1/4 was but I believe it was somewhere in the 15s

All AP2 S2000s have the 2.2L F22C engine. That engine from Honda was an absolutely amazing engine so most intakes and exhausts won't affect the performance at all. The catback my friend has on his pretty much just makes it sound a little better.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have an AP2...I love everything about them...except the impracticality in the snow (I hate living in the north) but I had a K20 civic and when I put on an Invidia cat-back I could feel a decrease in low-end torque...but it was a monster on the top end...like I said...I'd be interested to see the results of a race.

I was looking at them before I bought my R53 but they were all too far out of my price range The only ones that I could afford were rebuilt titles...but as for an all around daily driver that can put a smile on my face I haven't driven a better car than the R53...

I really do love my R50 as a DD. I'm quite happy with the mods I've put into it... very spunky little car, great to toss around. It's much more practical than an S2K (it snows here.) and once in awhile I might need a back seat.

This would be ideal! Unfortunately I'm a young apartment dwelling guy, so that's a few steps away! It wouldn't have been a problem paying for the Honda, but it would have been a four year loan, and I may be moving to Europe in three years. I didn't want to end up backwards on a loan when I was trying to leave the country!
