R56 brake pads and rotors
brake pads and rotors
car has 80000 miles, rear brake pads and rotors never been changed. Mostly highway though. Dearler says need to only change pads, no need to change rotors. Is that true!!! Based on my reading here it seems you MUST always change rotors and pads at the same time. I bought EBC red stuff brake pads and zimmermann rotors.
Views on that vary. Some (maybe most) dealers insist on changing rotors along with the new pads, regardless of rotor thickness; others only if rotors are sufficiently worn. If you can't feel a raised lip around their outer edge, they still have sufficient thickness.
Maybe your service guy actually checked rotor thickness (a good thing), or maybe they knew they wouldn't be selling you any of their rotors when you brought your own (more devious thinking).
Anyway, you got a lot of wear from the originals, and you've got good replacements for whatever is needed.

You don't necessarily need to change rotors when you change pads. Just a good bedding of the new pads will do.
However, 80k miles is a heck of a lot. I'd put the rotors in while you're in there working but if there is sufficient thickness in your old rotors then you may be fine.
