R50/53 need cruise control for my mini
i bought a used mini with the CVT trans. It didn't have cruise control on it as an option. Is there a reasonably priced way to install it after the fact. Has anybody installed an aftermarket one? Also where is the best plaxce to obtain an owners manuel and extra keys?
thanks

Good luck, when I was looking at MINI's the dealer showed me a basic one that didn't have the MFSW (cruise). I asked if cruise could be added and they said, "sure". When I questioned them futher they didn't know of anyone who had actually added it on, or where to get it. It's kind of ridiculous to me that cruise isn't standard equipment, at least in the U.S..
Anyway, sorry I can't help. It does seem that it should be available aftermarket.
Maybe someone else can help.
Enjoy your MINI.

Many, many moons ago I installed for the first and only time, a SEARS cruise control. It could not have been simpler, easier to install and totally trouble free from the get go. It is the only one I would ever consider. I know you won´t get one from Mini or BMW and if you do....$$$$
Extra keys cannot be made at the locksmith, as there is a microchip inside that the car reads before allowing the engine to start. You must get your extra keys from a BMW/MINI dealer and they are expensive.
I have not heard of anyone installing an aftermarket cruise control on the MINI.
Welcome to NAM!

Thanks, I thought the dealer was the place for keys I just thought you guys would have the connected dealer. I like being a part of a club with my car. You meet great people and it makes the drivong that much more fun.

where is that microchip? the metal shaft doesn't touch the electronics inside the key. is it in that shaft?

There are a few aftermarket cruise control kits that can be retrofitted onto the MINI. Summit Racing carries Audiovox AVX-CCS-100 that could work for the MINI.

The spare key will run you around $125 from the dealer and it's a process to get one. There's been on or two folks on here that have gone through it. The chip mentioned works on proximity, not direct contact. There's a thread on here from someone who split the key.
The factory owners manual that came with the car can also be gotten at the dealer, or if you're lucky you might find one at a salvage yard in a wrecked car.

Trippy did it.

>>I guess I don't understand. The cruise mechanics are all there you just have to get the airbagged control steeringwheel to operate?

You can use your existing airbag, but you do need to replace the part where the buttons are, as well as possibly some wiring. I don't have personal experience with this though; I ordered my car with the multi-function steering wheel.
As far as I know, the speed sensing mechanism, the computer, and the electronic throttle are in all MINIs. Find a good dealer and check with them.

I do not think that cruse control in the photo will work. The mini is a drive by wire so there is nothing to attach it to. I have a feeling all you would have to do is add the controls, maybe a wire harness, and have the dealer reprogram the car to tell it has cruse control. I am sure it will cost a bunch and yeah it should have been a std. item. But as you can see there are people that cut corners to make the car cheaper and didn’t get the cruse. Now they sold it and where are we all now? Lol, but keys are a dealer only thing. And the manual is on the web in a few places if you just want to read it, but you must have gotten a great deal on the car since it only had one key and no manual. Because I know I would never buy a car that has another special key floating around out there in the hands of the owner that doesn’t know where his manual is. Good luck I hope it works out for you.
