I am trying figure out advantages and disadvantages of various intakes. There are so many people who say that the stock intake is not really a cold air intake but when you look at the parts blowup of the JCW intake system it clearly is drawing fresh/cold air from the front of the car and through the grill.

#7, 8 and 9 are the tubes from the bottom of the stock intake that grab the fresh air.

I just have a hard time putting on many of the intake designs since they are simply pulling air from the hot engine compartment. I know the DoS does not. The DDM race setup pulls from the hood scoop. Its just odd that many of the intakes do away with the cars already designed fresh air source.

#1 of that parts break down is called the "muffler". Does anybody know if any of the concepts of the "modified intake silencer" would apply to the JCW intake to increase the intake sound?

Thread on the original modified intake silencer:

yep, it does draw in air from the front, and some aftermarkets like the DOS use the same OEM lower tube along with drawing air from the cowl. I think for throttle response you should look at the inside volume of the air filter . And the filter surface area.Bigger and more is better.

Why is one worried about the air temp into an intake system when the turbocharger on the 'S'-model / JCW completely negates that benefit?
Personally, grab a modification that actually does positive work for cooling down the charged air like an intercooler or water / methanol injection.

It's commonly regarded that aftermarket intakes do nothing on turbocharged cars. Well, they let you hear the turbo better, which is pretty neat.
