Drivetrain DIY heat sheild?
DIY heat sheild?
anybody made their own heat shield for the Turbo/hood scoop? Seems like a no brainer... I have no idea why they cost so much... its a bit ridiculous. I'm thinking they should go for $50 MAX

I've made a vent scoop (similar to the JCW Challenge race car) that mounts under the hood scoop to direct air over the turbocharger for air-cooling.

You could easily just find another MINI near by if they have a heat shield and sketch it out and take it to a machine shop. See how much they'd run you

After my hood scoop was replaced due to "warpage", I convinced the dealership to put one of the aluminum shields on. I think they can be had for about $25 online. If they had not given me one under warranty, I certainly would have attempted making one of my own. I'd probably get some aluminum flashing (a short roll at Lowe's/Home Depot) and some tin snips. You could make one for less than $10 in supplies very easily and attach using the existing push connectors under the bonnet. I say go for it and get creative.

yeah... I'm not looking to sell these. I just wanna make one for myself.
I think you guys are right in the stock heatsheild. I think I'm gonna look into maybe grabbing some aluminum and mocking one up.. Just one more layer of protection. I may even hook up some sort of air duct to run to the turbo for extra cooling.

Sloved Heat Problem Also
I agree Carbon Fiber is the way to go, no more problems with warping.

Agreed. Have had my CF hood scoop for 2 years with no warpage and I have no heat shield other than original factory unit.
