Just wanted to know what you non-s owners are getting mileage wise. When I first got the car and was babying it I would get 28 city, 31 Highway... Now I'm getting around 27,28 highway IDK if it's just me not driving efficiently but I made a conscious effort to drive better last fill up and didn't see a difference. Anyway just wondering what everyone else is getting, or if there is something I should be concerned about. I saw somewhere someones fuel filter went bad and that affected their mileage...?

Also, my car is a manual.

I have been keeping track of my mileage on Fuelly.com. I am missing about 2000 miles because I didn't start tracking right away. My total average for almost 6700 miles is 29.5mpg. The best I ever got was 35, but I honestly think that was a fluke b.c I always drove the same and could never get that number again. I do notice if I drive 70+ on the highway my mileage tanks to 25-27, but if I drive 55-60 I can get 30+ mpg consistently. I will make a note that I drive with the sport button on 100% of the time, and I have a 6MT.

My MPG's did go down from an average of 28-29 to 25-27 after I swapped on my heavier winter wheels and they swapped to winter gas. I am expecting it to go back up a little when I put the OEM's back on and go back to summer gas.

I did have a thermostat issue and that is when I saw my very worst mileage of 23-24mpg b.c it was dumping fuel due to the CEL.

Hmmm good call on the winter gas, I will say my mileage started to go down right about when it started getting colder. Also, I never use the sport button but when I'm on the highway and push past 80 it definitely tanks but if I sit around 75 see 31+. I'll have to take note and see if the mpg goes back up this summer, also thanks for the heads up about fuelly, I'll definitely have to start a page.

 

I was getting 28-29 MPG and as soon as it got cold and winter gas blend was switched, it dropped to 26 MPG.

 

This is not unexpected; remember that aerodynamic drag goes up with the square of speed. For example aero drag at 80 mph is about 30% higher than at 70 mph.

In addition to winter gas blends, just colder air and longer warmup time will reduce fuel economy.

 

No problem. I will have to go a fill up without using the sport button to see if it does any better. I also forgot to mention that I have my cross bars on all the time as well. I'm sure that cuts down mileage a little bit.

Very interested in the thermostat issue since I'm seeing mileage in the 23 range myself. Mine is a new 2012 with only 1,200 miles or so on it, so I was attributing the low mileage to break-in - now I wonder if I just have a bad thermostat. How did you know the thermostat had gone bad on you ?

The first tell tale sign was my fans kept coming on and staying on even though it was only 40* outside. Then the yellow -> red check engine light came on.

 

its the sensor on/next to thermostat that goes bad, telling the computer that engine running hot. My scan gauge showed 418fwt. 190f to 225f is the range

 

I have an S with All4, and came in here to find out how badly those items (turbo and awd) were affecting my fuel efficiency. I'm surprised to note that at 28.5 mpg average over 8000 miles, the boosted engine and awd system don't really appear to have much of a measurable effect on efficiency.

I don't mean to clutter the thread as an S/All4 owner, but if someone considering purchasing a CM is reading this and on the fence due to efficiency concerns, it's worth noting that it doesn't appear to be a major factor... and I don't drive gently (or with any concern for consumption beyond having chosen the All4 over other options due to that efficiency).

Yes I sometimes kick myself due to the MPGs not being that different, but it does add up after a while not having to use premium. The biggest difference for me was I have owned nothing but turbo AWD cars for years and I was sick of the added long term maintenance that comes with theme, esp with Mini Turbo cars. Would I take one if someone gave it to me, of course

 

I'll chime in as another S owner, even though you're looking for non-S mgp. I have a '12 CMS manual with about 6000 miles. I get about 25-26 in the city and around 30 on short highway jaunts. The best I've seen was 33 when I reset my mpg calculator as I got on the freeway for a short jaunt - 30 miles. On a 200 mile round trip I saw 32.3. I almost never use the sport button and have tried both Premium and Regular. I'm burning Regular now because I noticed absolutely zero difference in performance or mpg. The only difference was I left the gas station with my wallet a little lighter when I filled up with Premium. I also notice a big difference in mpg if I go faster than 72 on the freeway, and I do have some hills where I live and those also make a big difference - you can watch your mpg go down as you go up the hills. And no, my mpg's don't go up when I'm going down the hill unfortunately, at least not as much to compensate for what I lost going up the hill.

 

I had been averaging 26 or so MPG this winter with a mix of city and short freeway driving. However, last night I had a full tank and need to take a 50 mile freeway trip...upon arriving home, the computer reported 33.5 MPG which is near the highest I have ever had. Seems stop and go driving in the winter is much rougher on MPG than freeway driving in the winter.

 

8.4 L/100 km is pretty much what we average in combined driving. On the highway, usually 6.9 L/100 km. I thought it was a bit under powered at first, but for our environment, it is perfect.

 

First of all a shout out to Muskegon MI, I'm from Grand Rapids/Hart, now in CA and miss MI quite a bit.

Question, I'm relatively new to the Mini, just bought a Countryman S and my wife has had 3 MCS, 2 of them since we've been Married. I am not aware of the "long term maintenance" that comes with the "Mini turbo cars", I guess some due diligence will get me to the answer but that's my question.

Currently, 38.4 mpg on the highway. Last October from SF to Detroit (3 days, 800 mi/d at freeway speeds), I got around 43 mpg.
