Wet Tailpipe Syndrome

My wife thinks there may be up to two other MINI owners with this disorder. Just trying to establish that I'm not a freak, I ask:

Do you glance at your MINI's tailpipe after a too-short drive? Are you worried that it might be wet with exhaust condensation?

Again this morning... church is less than a mile away, so Molly's pipes were definitely wet in the parking lot during the service; and afterward in the garage. Had gasoline condensed into the crankcase? Was acid eating away at the muffler?

So, am I the only one obsessed with not having a hot tailpipe?

Oh you do honor us by being so trusting...

But since someone has already resorted to humor, I will resort to truth...

Me too.

It's about 1,000 feet to the cigarette store, and I have been known to drive a few miles beyond that (or 20, or the full Cape Anne loop) just because a small part of my brain says "no short drive cycles!"...

It may be a disease, but you are not alone...

And I got 168,000 miles out of the Works exhaust...

Happy New Year,

Charlie

One of the main products of combustion is water. On a short drive, that water is condensing out in the cold tail pipe. MINIs have a stainless steel exhaust system, so that water isn't going to rot you exhaust out.

Plus exhaust systems have tiny pin ***** holes in the muffler to let condensed water drain out.

Happy New Year,
Reassuring on both counts! Happy 2012 to you, as well

If it looks excessive you might be running a little richer than necessary. Any other unusual symptoms?
