Rear mud flap = ANGRY

Soory my mini rant here....but who ever designed and wrote the instructions for the rear mud flaps is an idiot....

I mean wow...brace clip and then some how put the flap into place while you jam your hand back there somehow and brace it...?!?!

Also, there is a perfectly good hole and fat plastic screw rivet that also holds bumper plastic to the frame rail thing that is no longer used and you put a brace right by the big hole so it can just slip through at some point... geeze

why not just cut the mud flap hole bigger and re use the rivet..

Very frustrating...

PS - locking lugs suck as well...

Dealer install here too. Not worth the effort and install for me only cost like $15.

I'm going to be installing my mudflaps. The dealer chargers like $180 to do it.

I watched the dealer tech and owner do this install at the last MM DIY day. What a pain for some simple mudflaps. And that was with the car up on the lift to make it easier.

I installed my own and it wasn't too bad. There are some great instructions in the How To section that are much clearer than Mini's:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...p-install.html

The pdf he provides was invaluable:

Sorry to hear the OP had a tough time. I installed my own front and rear mud flaps. I thought it was about 1 of 5 on the scale of difficulty, but some folks are just more handy at stuff like that than others. I also took advantage of the instructions in the How To section. As I recall, I drilled out my rear mud flap to use the big plastic screw.

My SA and I put my wife's on while it was sitting in the showroom. We ordered it with them and it was delivered without. Luckily they had a set and we did it right there as other customers watched.

Yeesh that's ridiculous. After you've done one once to learn how it's done, the front ones are dead simple. Those guys can probably bang them out in 5-10 minutes each.

I was going to order mine with flaps, but my salesman advised against it. When I asked why he pulled out his handy dandy book o' install pricing.

$450.

Are you effing kidding me? Clearly, I skipped the mudflaps. Thinking about some Rally Armor units if somebody ever posts about them.

I installed mine today. It was easy but the directions are not that great. The key is to remove the rear wheel and remove the one plastic screw that holds the wheel liner in. You use that hole to place the first screw in its place. Once you get that one in position the flap and place the metal clips on the edge to hold the flap in place and then place the second screw. You use the metal reinforcement clips for the screws like bolts. You just reach behind the liner and place the clips on the screws and tighten them. This will secure the flap to the liner. It took me about 15 minutes of figuring and 10 minutes to place the flap. Hope this helps...

$450 to install flaps!! That's ridiculous. It took me less than an hour to install all four of them..... And I am no MINI mechanic.

Ditto on the drill out and big plastic screw. Puts it right where it needs to be...

I did a google search. Found and printed a .PDF of the Mini/BMW instructions with pictures, but that big plastic screw in the rear "may" be new because it wasn't in the instructions (I have a 2012 MC).

Also just cut a slits for the clips to slide into instead of cutting a section out as the instructions seemed to indicate.

To sum it up - mark holes with a light color chaulk pencil (or similar), align clip a cut a slit, drill out the mud flap for the big plastic screw and toss the second clip on the far inside rear out (align the larger hole with the OEM plastic one).

I plan to replace the big plastic screw with a slightly longer one when I find it or a new pop-in plastic body panel clip the same diameter.

I have an '09 and a '011. The '09 I installed as per directions, which are sketchy at best! They fit perfectly, BUT they(the rears) did NOT ADHERE properly, even after cleaning the fender flare with alcohol. SOOOOOOO, pull them off and clean with acetone; that worked

When I bought my 2011 I had the dealership install them(good deal on price) but that good deal quickly turned to crap when they started gaping between the flare and the flap. Took back to the dealership to fix (all time and hassle). Got it back and withing a month it is back to the gap again...... Now I will deal with it myself since my fix worked

And MINI won't flood the market with dealerships, like ford, chevy, mazda, because they can't stand competition for prices and quality. That is the worst thing about MINI.

I installed mud flaps on my Justa yesterday. The instructions are not great but workable. The install took about 2hrs. I did not remove the rear wheels but it would certainly be easier without them in the way. The adhesive strip does not hold the flaps in place against the rear bumper. I tried some thicker, wider 3M automotive foam tape (that I had on hand) and it didn't work either. The flaps are just not very well designed A simple redesign and some pre-punched holes in the fender surround would make for an easier and sturdier installation (think Mazda Miata).

The parts guy printed out the OEM instructions for installing the mudflaps and I had some difficulty with the rear guards. It was worth it doing them myself because they cost far too much at the dealer to install. However as some others have experienced the adhesive is losing its grip on the fender. You can't really tell that there's a slight gap but I might attach some tape on there when the weather starts warming up.

WTF people really?! The dealerships are trying to charge you hundreds to install these parts? The parts are not that expensive and it is less then an hour of labor. They take like 20 to 30 minutes tops to install. At the going dealer labor rate of about $120/hour that is maybe $60 right there.

Even with these prices when I had my done I still don't remember paying over $100 for them. So I don't know where the hell your stealerships are coming up with these prices but they are wrong.

@Porthos, it was Tom Bush in Jacksonville that quoted me the ridiculous $400 some. Where did you get yours done? I see you're here too.

You are correct. The MINI should come from the factory as that being an option, and done correctly!!

I don't think anyone (including the dealer) is going to install a full set of flaps in 20-30 min. A dealer mechanic with previous experience could probably do in in 1 hr. A home handyman without a lift will expend at least 30 min just removing and replacing the rear wheels (if you choose that route). Others may be quicker, but it took me 2 hrs (I left the wheels on).

MINI of Hawaii did mine about 3 to 4 weeks after I bought the car from a Subaru dealership.

Did mine in 30 minutes while I sat in the waiting room. It was such a short time they did not require an appointment. Also I had looked at 2 MINIs on the show room floor getting ready to look at a 3rd when they said they were done. Shocked me it was done so fast.

It is 404ing on the actual link but, when it is back up print that up and take it back to them and tell Beth at Service she is "high as a ****ing kite"! She has a tendency to just spit numbers out instead of checking or talking to the mechanics first.

It was my sales guy actually. Had some book he showed me to discourage ordering them with the vehicle. I'll have to check into it again. Considering what a PITA it seems to be, might be worth having them do it. Though I'm considering Rally Armor units, too.

The front mudflaps are useful but what do the rear ones do??? If it creates more air turbulence under the car then isn't the Boot going to get filthy quicker? Leads to the dreaded DBS (dirty boot syndrome).
