anyone have this problem (pic)

I have a R56 MCS 2007 AUTO

Anyone having this issue? I can be driving at 100km/h on the 5th gear and when this warning sign comes on I cant change gear at all! manual mode wont work. I cant do anything. It just stays on 5th. I could slow down to 60km/h and it will still stay on 5th. I have to pull over, shut the engine, turn it back on and everything will be back to normal until it happens again, this could be 2 months in between!

There is no pattern for this to happen. Not the way i drive, weather conditions, road conditions. It happens too randomly.

Handbook shows cause as:
  1. automatic selector lever locked: selector lever locked in position P with engine running and brake depressed or
  2. Brake signal faulty: gear can be engaged without depressing the brake

My money's on the brake pedal switch that tells the car's brain that your foot is on the brake. Should be an easy diagnosis/fix. Hopefully.

What happens after you've parked and turned off the car? Are you still able to remove the key with the gear shift in "D" or any other gear? Molly had this warning icon three times in the first year and a half.

Follow the steps in this thread to help get you a more accurate description of the error message.

Most likely you will need a trip to a dealer or a service center with a BMW diagnostic computer to read the actual codes in the transmission module.

Yep, It's not good. I also have a 2007 MCSa. It started around 45,000 miles. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything. Finally, it did it constantly and left a code for them to read. It turned out to be the Transmission control unit inside the tranny. My car had 52,000 miles when this occured. it was at the dealer for three weeks. The service manager went to mini and convinced them that I had brought it in before the warrenty was up so they graced the repair. I would mention this to your dealer when you take it in.

I'll go back and look at my Service Records to see what it was on Molly,
1. 6/28/08 Selector Lever Interlock (unable to locate this RO)
2. 7/16/08 Transmission Failure Light Displays - Stop Light Switch Part #61-31-6-967-601 Tested and found faulty brake switch
3. 8/19/08 Transmission Failure - Selector Lever Interlock 5271 WMIN Per bulletin completed Gear Shift Selector Cable adjustment.
4. 8/29/08 Cog Light Displays in Yellow - Gearshift Assy. Part #25-16-7-577-589 Tested and found faulty Gear Shift Switch Unit

These are actual notes from my RO's.
