R56 my mostly useless rally lights
my mostly useless rally lights
I'm sure it has been asked in past, just wondering if there is an update or if anyone found any way to convert the rally light switch to power up when ignition is on, and bypass the "brights only on" function of these? I'd like to utilize mine as daytime running lights or anytime lights. I find it odd and disappointing based on cost that they only come on with brights as most accessory lights turn off when brights are engaged. I also don't like that Mini version of DRL's where all lights have to be on. I do a lot of city driving in and out of places with engine on and off and I'd think that would reduce life of xenons and all bulbs in general. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
There is a reason they do that. You're not supposed to drive with those lights on under normal conditions, as they are not certified as low beam headlights. They can cause glare to oncoming traffic, and is a safety issue.
Although I appreciate your response, two standard 55 watt bulbs, sitting as low as the Mini is, closer to the inside of the grill, than out...I cannot see where glare is an issue and I cannot test that without brights on in a normal driving condition. So no one tried to alter the switch power?...was ultimately the question asked.
I've read that you can change the programming to allow the driving lights to stay on. Here is a thread that talks abut how to access the MINI's computer modules to alter just about anything.

If you're good with a multimeter, you can bypass the high-beam "trigger" wire and allow them to be turned on and off at your disposal.
However, you will need to cut / splice the existing driving rally light harness to create such modification.

I think it would be great to do that when you are on the road by yourself or if you have someone really making you mad.

I live in Maine and here they do State vehicle inspections yearly. Here the driving lights MUST be connected to the brights only and go off when the brights are not in use. Further, the fog lights must go off when the driving lights come on. Your car cannot get inspected here unless they work the correct way and you can get a ticket for having them work wrong. You might want to check with your local law enforcement in order to save yourself from having to undo all your work.
Doesn't seem like a big enough socket to scare someone away if you ask me. I would at least throw a 16mm or above socket.....
There's an electrical wiring diagram here: http://motoringfile.com/files/R56_aux_lights.PDF. It is relatively easy to bypass the hi-beam interlock.
But seriously, do you want to look like you're driving around with your hi-beams on all the time? Driving lights are designed to function like an extra set of hi-beams.

The comment your referring to was kind of dumb.
Just my opinion though.

Most DRL systems run only the headlights on at reduced power. The MINI DRL as they call it has all lights on, (including tail lights), at full power. Should be: ALAO All Lights Always ON.
How do you drive in and out of places with the engine off?
".....driving in and out of places with engine on and off......"
I understand. It was my way of deflecting the emphasis on guns in cars. Violence and driving do not mix well, with or without guns. And I too hope this does not turn into a thread about guns, so I am returning to the regularly scheduled MINI programming. Best of luck to the OP in his quest for the correct set-up. Just please check the laws in your state before making a decision.
Ditto to that! No emisions here, no inspections and just to **** off the local hillbillies where my Mini is a minority I use my rally lights on brights all the time.
thanks for responding to rally Q which turned into a guns in cars debate - UGH!
OK PEEPS - Calm down on the gun scare - no guns. I will leave the rally lights alone for now. I like the idea of daytime running lights, but on the Mini all lights have to be on for DRLs. I do alot of in-city driving - little hops here and there at high speed which makes my girlfriend suck air thru her teeth while holding the "oh ****" handle above her head...so - ignition on, lights on, ignition off, lights off. So I don't use the drl's. I believe the Mini dealer said alot of on/off switching of the xenons is bad for them so I usually just have my front and rear fogs on during my am commute at dawn or later at dusk. No, I don't usually carry a 9mm but have a permit to. I should have included a smiley face at the end of that to insure it would be taken as humor. Sheesh! I found some LED daytime running light kits that have a sensor that somehow senses when you turn on your ignition just via the battery hookup. I might try those. I was thinking of adding a single LED lightbar in the scoop of my 2010 as a DRL but my mechanic said "Well we're going to have to cut into an ignition wire to do that". UGH! No, I don't want to do that. I am hoping maybe he can do a switch inside next to shifter as I have one open port near the DSL and Sport switches. I hear there is a "Sport ON" chip which allows sport mode automatically on - why not make the car that way? It's a sports car, let me switch to sheep mode and turn it off. Anyway. Thanks for the ummmm enlightening responses.
