It is a spirited drive through the twisties.

 

See, out here in the West, the roads, they have curves.

Be sure to go to the Starved Rock Run in late spring/early summer. There will be alot of nice twisties to fulfil your appetite for a little while. I promise!

Yeah in the Southeast we have them too. Not sure if you have heard of the Dragon's Tail :smile:

I don't know if I can speak for them, since I haven't been on one, but I heard it is when they all line up at the rim of the Grand Canyon (some really big geological depression out West) and at the same time, they floor the car and head down the side. The first one at the bottom in one piece wins. This is why M7 is looking for the lightest car. If it is light enough it doesn't hit the boulders, crevices and rocks as hard as the other ones. Therefore his car is in better shape. He also likes the wing in the back to give him some lift and he can actually sometimes lift off at the edge and fly down to the bottom if there is a strong headwind. Pretty cool to see and witness.

 

As you can tell my last post was a joke. It is late at night and I start joking around when I am overtired.

Peter, man I love your products, and look forward to buying many more. You are a great vendor with a lot of knowledge making some cool and edgy products for the Mini. Still in love with my grill. So no disrespect.

Canyon runs, as has been pointed out, means driving (AT A BRISK PACE) on winding roads which twist up and down the sides of a canyon. These roads pretty much following the natural curves in the canyon so there are lots of turns one after another. To a MINI driver, this translates into CURVE CARVING!

Yeehaw pardner, put on ya spurs 'n drive that thar cute lil' buckboard.

cool. id like to join too. i go there a couple times each summer.
I have the Audi/Porsche get together directions somewhere... the most
twisty part goes by too fast though. better than nothing...

 

i have run the canyons and i can say they are twistie. they have no armacord road protectors. the rocks come right down to the road and the highway is carved out as tight as they can make it to the side of the canyon. many times the hyways go over 180 degrees of change in direction just to keep the road from getting to steep to get around a giant bolder. during the week when there is little to no traffic cars will pull over to let you have a great run. the speed limit is 25 or so but the twist are so tight that the mini is best in 2nd and many times it is not worth pulling to third only to loose rpm when down shifting and breaking. the most fun is of course the way the mini just seems to be sking the road or like cutting the wave on a surfboard. totally a neat ride. the roads are short maybe 7 or eight miles but there are many and they are all different. between hyway 1 on the coast by malibu and 101 by thousand oaks california. now that i have moved to western washington we have another stretch of 101 that fallows the hood canal and it is nice twisties. hope this helps. mcs brg checherboard roof and many mods

 

Make sure you take some skeeter spray if you're planning on getting out of the car.

 

DiD, where are those pictures taken? Those roads/canyon looks very familiar. I could almost swear it is Payson canyon in Payson Utah.

 

Imagine if you will.. 8 miles of road... now take it and fold down on it self so that no straight part is longer than 300 feet..add a generous helping of 150 degree switchbacks and bunches of S curves...

Oh did I mention make the road about 8 feet wide...


then add Mountain rocks on the right side and a sheer 1200 foot drop on the left side..

DO NOT add guard rails....

Have the road drop 3 miles in altitude while going down the 8 miles of road...


Add a dozen crazed Mini Drivers... with M7 in the front ( you don't want him behind you)(trust me.. i know)


Now just for fun... at the bottom, where it flattens out and heads for the ocean..

add 2 very nasty bumps... (can you say airborne) followed very rapidly by a hard left and then a hard right...


You will probably notice smoke coming from your brakes at the bottom.. DO NOT use the emergency brake.. (warped rotors)

Man, DO I love California!!!!!

I use to live in LA and took my modded 98 Honda Prelude there every weekend
to race up and down the canyon sides. That tuna canyon is one of the
narrowest roads in Malibu and kicks butt. very dangerous but totally enjoyed it.
It was the last part of my trail going down either tuna or topanga on the other side. That area you get about 15-25 miles of canyon to drive if you know
the roads.

i miss LA.
