Just a heads up for those that do routine maintenance themselves.

Hey guys,

I ordered plugs, wires, ignition coil from Amazon the other day and went about installing it and came up with an issue with the coil pack.

The stock coil pack has 4 (10mm) hex bolts, each surrounded by a metal sleeve and two rubber bushings. When removing, the bushings themselves come off, but not the sleeve.

My issue is with the new coil pack from a company called OEM (Original Engine Management - not to be confused with Original Equipment Manufacturer). The new coil packs bolt holes do not allow the sleeve to be inserted and try as i might, could not remove the bolts from the sleeves themselves without thinking of ruining something.

No big deal, really. I could get new bolts from home depot, but i'm at an age where when I buy things to plug and play, I don't want to spend extra time modifying things to play.

So just a heads up is all if you come across this type of coil pack.

Quick question though for those who maintain and not upgrade .. which coil pack was a direct swap? Original mini is quite expensive.

How much is the stock replacement from mini?

You can do the MSD upgrade for $120, and it comes with bolts (for your pleasure):

I could, but everything is stock and that's the way i like it so the addition of a coil that could pump 40K volts through stock 7mm wires would be a moot point.

Plus the coil I got was $40. I just need to find one with holes larger that are actually OEM fit.

Ah, that is a good bit cheaper.

Autopartswarehouse.com has always treated me well when it comes to cheap stock replacements (as you know, not everything needs to be upgraded). Check there?

Have you tried rockauto.com? I love that place. I haven't gotten anything for the Mini from there yet, but I've gotten stuff for a number of other cars. Fast shipping and good parts. They have coils from 7 different manufacturers on the site. Give it a look, one will probably fit the bill for you.

I was going to use rock auto, but i have Amazon Prime so the shipping was free.

Anyway, I checked out Mini of South Atlanta to see the exploded diagram of the coil and its parts and found no type of sleeve to be had in the diagram. Its called a collar screw http://parts.miniofsouthatlanta.com/...rchString=coil, but the picture shows no sleeve whatsoever.

Maybe my sleeve from the pack came off? Still doesn't explain why I couldn't get it off. I may just have to go to Home Depot.

Purchased MSD coil and wires and had same issue got screws online couldnt find size I needed at Home Depot. Entertained the idea of drilling holes out so that the OEM ones would fit.
