Going to college in HI...take the car with? Or leave it..
I am most likely transferring to college in Honolulu in january..
Except I have to leave my car behind
...unless I decide to take it. What would you guys do? I've heard the public transportation in honolulu is pretty good and a lot of people use it. Maybe after a year of living I'll ship the car out??? I'll probably just leave it under a car cover in my garage if I don't decide to take it. Opinions?? So by the time I come back in a couple years, it will be about 2013/14, with about 50k on her..not bad. I'll also be back twice a year probably in the summer time. I'm gonna miss this damn thing..

How much is it to ship the car out? I hear that gas is pretty expensive there. I'd get bored of driving on an island. But then again, the normal range of my driving is way less than the area of Oahu.
I was in kauai about a month ago and gas was, for premium, $4.30-4.65. our family friends moved to maui a year back and I think they said it was around 800-1000 to ship each car out.
edit: does anyone know how many times the car would need to be driven in order to keep it running smooth? I'd probably be leaving it for about ~6mos until I return each time (summer...xmas..).....would my parents need to drive it every month or so?

Here's a link to Hawaii's public transportation. http://www.thebus.org/route/routes.asp
Buses do not run late night to most areas. If you live near the campus, the bus is doable, but won't work for extra curricular activities. If you're attending Manoa campus, the parking if horrible. A scooter/bicycle is a better choice if you live close. If you ship your car, the cost of the shipping is about $85 a month for a two year stay. Down side is no car when you go home to visit.
Just my 2 cents.

Leave the car at home. Use public transportation and bike. Focus on doing well during the semesters---there will be enough distractions already. The MINI will be your reward during the summers when you visit home.
I agree, as heart breaking as it will be to leave the car at home.
As for storage, it would be advisable for your parents to every so often start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.

This! and let the rents drive the mini once or twice a month because the worst thing you can do to a car is let it sit
