Fan comes on a lot and is really loud!

Hi,

I just bought a 2010 Cooper convertible, and the fan comes on even when we don't run the a/c. It is really loud and stays on for at least a minute or two after I turn off the car. Is this normal? I didn't experience this with me 2009 Cooper. TIA!

I have a 2009 MCSc and I only hear the fan when I turn the motor off...and then only when it is very hot, say high 80's-90's, and then only for about a minute.

This was happening quite frequently in one day particularly with my 2011. Fan was staying on when the car was running (when it wasn't very hot out and I hadn't traveled far at all), and then when i turned the car off it remained on. Upon next start up I got a check engine light. Dealer diagnosed it as a thermostat issue, and it was repaired the same day I brought it in

I think it's normal. Mine does that pretty often when it's hot out. After I turn off the car it'll keep running for a few minutes.

yes, definitely a normal process, especially since the OP has a 2010. if it were an electrical bug like mine was, it would have presented itself and been fixed a while ago.

Can anyone explain why this didn't happen with my 2009 MC?

I had my temp sensor changed and working normal now. I though it was the thermostat but it wasn't. The temp sensor think the engine is to hot so it will come on and off all day long until my car battery complete die. The engine fan should not come on often.

Check to see if this is temp sensor problem or thermostat by cooling the car down and see if the fan still run.

Temp sensor is about $20 and easy to change.
