Trans Failure '05 Mini - 5 Speed

I have been lurking here for a while and this is my first post.

2005 Mini - Getrag 5 Speed, 145K miles

For the past 4 weeks we have had a growl develop in the 5 speed trans. I pulled the trans over the past few nights and split the cases last night. I was thinking I would find a bad diff bearing but I was wrong :-(

The pinion shaft bearing area has failed. See pictures below.

I think the input shaft might be ready to go but need more opinion on that. The tapered bearings for the diff also look like they are worn to me too.

I know I can get a used trans on ebay and other places. But I would rather make the repair for less $$$ if possible. Does anyone know where these parts can be purchased from??

Thanks for any help!!!

Jon

I believe that Mini Mania has a repair kit available.
There is also a company that lists on Ebay for repair kits.
Check under MINI, transmissions.
Good luck!
Very well detailed pics.
Nice to be able to see what someone is talking about.

Those parts are for the Midlands version of the 5 speed that came up to 2004. We have the Getrag version which was supposed to be much better. I guess it's pretty good but I would like to have gotten more mileage from it.

This has been a great car for us and have no complaints at all. Never been to the dealer for a repair!

I'd agree that the final drive bearings look ready to be replaced. Looks like some poor metallurgy on that shaft!

I'd think you could source a whole used trans and use it or find a used trans that's cracked because of a wreck and get it even cheaper.

We've seen this failure a couple times on that 5spd trans. Shoot me an email with everything you need and we'll get you pricing on the parts.

I know this thread is a bit old, but does anyone have any working pics of that pinion shaft bearing? As every where I am looking can't seem to tell exactly what one looks like or give me a part number, and I believe that is what is wrong with my trans (04 base) :(

The bearing may be replaceable for the 2004 trans. On the 2005 trans, the bearing does not run on a race but the pinion shaft itself and the shaft was worn on my trans. Don't recall exactly how the midlands trans was set up. I think it's replaceable. We ended up getting a low mileage used trans to replace the failed trans.

On the older "Midlands" pre 7/2004 MINI Cooper ( Non S ) 5 Speed Transmission, you can get a bunch of the internals and external pieces. On the Getrag " ZF " 5 Speed Transmission 7/2004+ MINI Cooper ( Non S ) Transmission on a few things from MINI are available , mostly externals.

Do you have a picture of this bearing or have idea of the location?

"Midlands" pre 7/2004 MINI Cooper ( Non S ) 5 Speed Transmission:

Thanks

Here are some of the internal diagrams. Do you have a picture of this bearing or have idea of the location?

No, as I don't have the trans out of the car yet. Lots f people keep saying "Oh it's the differential bearing" or "oh it's the pinion bearing" but no one can provide a picture or part # to either of these bearings :(

Unfortunately I am reviving this thread. Anyone have a solution (other than a new/rebuit transmission) to a bad pinion shaft in a getrag 5-speed transmission by any chance? There is a place on ebay the says they will fix the part if you send it to them with a new bearing. Anyone tried this? TIA!

Without a rebuilt or machine shop, there are few internals if any at all for the 5 speed getrag. Most people get a used transmission or a factory rebuilt.

You can source used transmissions for around $3-500, most of which may come with a warranty from a junk yard or Car-part.com.

The install should cost you between $7-800, minus if you want to install a clutch at the same time as well as some recommended seals to be replaced.

All in all, you could have the car fixed for just over $1,000 if you do some searching for a good used trans.
