I have not used one so I do not have any first hand experience with the one in the Mini.

I do have one in my 997 and did have a couple in my "retired" Lotus and it seems to bring down the oil temps. But I never had any engine troubles with either of those cars.

What woud you need one for? If the factory thought the MINI needed one to would have come with it. It already has engine coolant cooling the turbo.

It might help if you were towing and/or have heavy track use. Not sure what the op had in mind.

If your not tracking and towing with your MINI the only real benefit is lowering the oil temp to reduce coking of the turbo bearings. Coking is when the oil in the turbo turns to carbon from overheating and gums up the shaft until it wont spin. When the engine is turned off and the oil stop flowing and sits in the turbo and over heats. The oil cooler helps reduce this by lowering overall oil temp. You can also reduce coking by letting the car idle for 15 to 30 sec or longer for hard runs to let the turbo "spool down" and cool before oil flow stops

The N14 MCS engine DOES have an oil cooler!

It is very small and located right under the oil filter housing. The German translation often translates to "lube oil heat exchanger". It uses engine coolant to cool the oil.

The only aftermarket oil cooler I've seen was from M7. It's a tube & fin style cooler that mounts on the radiator. Be prepared to pay $~550.

I am going to be installing an oil catch can on my Mini to keep all the blowby out of my intake and turbo.

Is there enough room on the upper section of the radiator to allow for this oil cooler? It looks like where it's placed in your pictures would interfere with a larger stepped style intercooler.

With the big intercoolers it moves up and mounts more behind the bumper support. It still gets good airflow there just not as much as the lower mounting position.
