Cannot turn off car with Bluetooth engaged!

I've got a 2008 Cooper S with Bluetooth, pairing with a Droid2. If I am on a call, I cannot turn off the car. I can kill the engine, but Bluetooth will not pass the call back to my handset, so I cannot completely kill the Accessory power unless I hang up.

I have the convenience package, too, so I'm driving without the fob inserted. I have not tested to see if having to remove the fob would kill the call, or pass the call to my phone, or even kill the accessory power.

I called my MINI dealer, and no one in Service has heard of this problem.

Anyone had this happen? Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks
Mary

I haven't experienced this with my MINI but it has happened a lot with my X5. I have the convenience package on the Bimmer, too. I am able to transfer the call to my iPhone but it would still be connected to the car. The BMW logo on the iDrive screen won't turn off until I hang up. I would always hangout and stay in the car or around the car until I end the call.

That was until I realized I can just walk away from the bluetooth range.

My dad's '10 mini does the same thing. He has a cheap flip phone. My iphone on my '11 mini will pass in and out of the bluetooth. I do not know if the problem is the phone or the bluetooth in the car.

I have the same problem with my '11. I have a crappy phone with verizon, and as much as I love having bluetooth, I can't figure out how to solve the issue you mentioned. I was in the same situation, on the phone through the car, I parked and was ready to start walking, had the engine off etc, and I couldn't get it back to my phone. I was playing around with the in call menu when I was engaged in a conversation again and I found an option on my phone for when in call to switch the sound back to the headset, so try looking for something like that on your phone.

On my 08, I find that when I shut the car off, the blue tooth stays engaged. I transfer the call back to the handset via the option on the phone. I get out of the car and walk away. When I return, the system is off, so i believe as soon as you break away from the range that the car can pickup the phone, it turns off.

Thanks for the solution!

Big DUH on my part. I'd never looked at the phone screen while in this situation. Sure enough, there's a button to disengage the bluetooth. I think I read about it when I first got the car - as a way to talk privately over the handset and not broadcast over the microphone in the car. I'd forgotten all about it, and using bluetooth, I don't typically handle the phone during calls. So now, if I'm on a call when I stop my car, I have to dig the phone out of my purse, and hit the Bluetooth button before I can turn off the accessory power. Kind of clunky, but it works! And yesterday, I did test walking away, as one poster mentioned. I walked three house lengths, and the bluetooth connection did not break! I also tested having the fob inserted - pulling it out while still on the phone did not kill the accessory power!

Not had this issue before. Do you happen to have the Comfort Access? That would allow you drive the car without inserting the fob correct?

Yes, I have the Comfort Access. Even though I rarely use the fob, I tested this situation with the fob inserted, and removing the fob does not cut the bluetooth connection.

This is the normal (by design) operation of the bluetooth system.

As stated above if you want to get out of the car during a phone call you must use your phone to "activate handset" or something similar to transfer the call to your phone. If you want the car's radio to turn off immediately you would also have to disconnect the car manually in your phone's bluetooth menu.

+1

But if your phone does not five you an option to "switch to handset" or somethign similar tehn you can use one of the buttons on the cars display screen to kill the bluetooth connection as well, but you phone my not actually transfer teh call it may just end it.

for the bluetooth issue, what I do with my iphone is switch it to the handset, get out of the car, and press the lock button on the door.. That shuts off the acc power immediately.

@lovemycocomini I believe I read somewhere that you can move the bluetooth mic from where the sunroof switch is.. Not sure though. If anyone knows anything about that, chime in!

It is probably still located in the same area.. Where the driver and passenger light switches are located up on the roof area.. however I would say if the top is down your probably not going to have any luck with the bluetooth at all.. When i have my windows down and I get a call on the bluetooth, I immediately put them up because i know people cant hear me when there down..

A Fix!

Ok so I got off the phone with MINI and this is what he said

The problem is that all the microphones are in fact in the passenger door... this is because the cars are made overseas and the people over there that is the driver side! They just haven't gotten to sticking the mic on the other side for the ones being sent to america

SO the fix...

He said to push the music note symbol thats next to the radio control... this will bring up the bass/treble etc controls ... on that screen to the far right you will see an arrow... select that... that will pull you up to another screen... there is an option on there to select in-dash volume (something like that) crank that all the way up... he thought the highest it would go is a 6 but he wasn't 100% sure... he said doing this has fixed the problem for most drivers!

I'll try this out when I get in my MINI... hope it works guys!!

The microphone for the convertible is on the steering wheel assembly next to the tach. I don't knwo who told you it is in the door.

This is wrong.

In the Coop and Clubman the Mic is in the ceiling console but on the R57 the Mic has 'always' been behind the steering wheel and I am sure it still is.

All I can say is that most, not all, but most people from MINI, especially MA's or MINI USA customer service have no idea where things are in the car. I know when I asked my MA and SA about the MIC both had no idea where is was located. And when the SA asked all the Techs at my dealership none of them had a clue either. And they are one of the top rated MINI dealers in the US.

BTW putting the MIC in the door would cause SO MANY more problems with wind noise even with the windows up there would be no way that it could actually work.
