R55 Thiking Clubby for 2nd MINI..Please help decide
Thiking Clubby for 2nd MINI..Please help decide
Let me start off and say I hope this is in the right forum....
OK gang, I need some advice. As you may know from my previous posts we are having a blast with our new 2011 MCS. My wife loves it,...she loves the look of the car, the nimble handling, the radio, seats, cockpit, and the people we have met in the local club.
However, she has said that with the exhaust, intake and blacked out chrome that it’s “my” car and not "ours."
Now she’s bugging for a Mini of her own. Uuuggghhhhhh!
So I was bouncing some ideas around and this is our current situation.
She drives a Hyundai Tuscon (small SUV) with 45k miles in great shape. She owes $8k and it is blue booked at $13-14k so we have some equity. It’s a good car and has plenty of room and 100k powertrain warranty. Her payment is $322 per month for about 24 more months.
Soooo today I went to Flow MINI and spoke with my previous salesperson and laid out the stuff on paper and asked what they could do….without even seeing our trade they put a $12k value on it, which I thought was acceptable since the car was at home. They said I get a repeat customer discount too.
They pitched a 2011 Chili Red Clubman (Non turbo) manual (she wants manual) with premium and cold weather package, 16” wheels, HK, Bluetooth/IPOD, sunroof, leatherette, climate control and piano black. It’s basically the same car as mine, but non turbo, clubby version. I thought the Clubby be better since its a hair bigger with more rear leg room.
With my Tuscon as trade and ZERO down they can do a deal with April Promo and get us in the car for $351 a month for 60 months at .09 interest. And that is without any haggle and seeing if they can put more money into my trade. I would like to haggle and get the clear bra and the price a hair below $340 all said and done.
Here is my dilemma…I know I can afford the extra $25 month payment, and in all honesty the gas savings alone will probably make up the difference. I am worried that in 4 years when we are out of warranty I will get upside down in costly repairs. A part of me says to buy a warranty on the S (more prone to problems .i.e.turbo and my driving mannerisms) and then deal with the Clubman on a per diem basis.
I wanted to ask you Mini “experts” what you think about long term costs on a non-turbo clubman verses the Hyundai. I hear that the 2011 clubman motor is a new design and if the cars are not “beat” or driven like a bat out of hell they are as reliable as any car.
But even something minor like a window motor going bad will be line $500 in Mini verses a few hundred in a Hyundai, right?
Here is my pro- con list I’m logically going over:
PRO-My daughter is going off to college so most of the time its only my wife and I or one parent and my young son in the car. Back seat space not a big deal, but clubman offers more when needed[
PRO- Much better gas than the Hyundai which gets about 20-24 MPG (I think)
PRO- My wife will have HER OWN MINI….so I don’t sweat every time she drives mine wondering where she is parking and if she’s gonna put the first scratch or get a door ding. And she would be out of her mind if I suprised her with a new car
.
PRO- WE are avid bikers and we can put a bike rack on CLUBBY and it won’t damage the sporty look of my “S”. It would also put less miles on my 2003 Chevy diesel pick up that has 120k miles, which we are using to go biking now.
PRO- We have a pick up (crew cab 4 dr) as a third vehicle if needed for big trips or purchases of big items at Home Depot and such.
Here are the CONS:
CON- Higher insurance premium on two new Minis verses the Tuscon and one Mini
CON- Not as much space in clubby verses Tuscon for food shopping or if we need to buy something that comes in a large box. ( but we can use the pickup)
CON- Smaller Clubby might be less safe than Tuscon in crash?
CON- Cant put a mountain bike INSIDE clubby, can in Tuscon
CON- We sometimes get snow in NC and we live on a gravel packed road leading toour home in the country. The Tuscon does great in snow…clubby?
CON- Someone mentioned a non-turbo MINI is doggedly slow and we would hate driving it after owning an S. I figured with it being a manual, if I added an air intake it would help. I need to drive one.
I don’t know what to do guys and gals…someone push me one way or the other…..I love the MINI but financially if we ended up having two cars out of warranty at the same time in a few years, a major repair on both at the same time could wipe out our budget cushion.
Decisions, decisions......I also know darn well that after we go to the Dragon in 3 weeks and she sees all the other women and their Minis, I'll never hear the end of it....lol
Thanks for listening to me brainstorm,
Larry

If you're looking for an angel on a shoulder to talk you out of it... you may have come to the wrong place!
I can help with some of your cons...
For Space, think about how often you use the space in the Tucson.
As long as you're not doing costco runs for an entire month, you'll be fine with the Clubbie's space. Our shopping for two for two weeks fits behind the backseat no problem. If we're getting crazy? fold the seats! You can get a nice 8' christmas tree in there.
You definitely can fit -A- bike in the back of the Clubman when you take the wheel off. I think mine was a 26" hybrid and i got it in and out with minimal hassle. A rack would be a better choice if you're gonna be mudding around though!
As for snow, clubman works fine in it. You may want to think about snow tires depending on how much snow and how plowed/unplowed roads are around you. We get a fair amount but I stick to the city so all-seasons are good enough for me.

As for safety...

Mini's don't tend to roll over. That was a T-bone crash. In particular, pay close attention to how the engine compartment of the Mini crumpled and the engine dropped under the passenger compartment...which remained virtually intact.
As for everything else: I'm going from a GMC Yukon to a Mini. I will regularly haul testing equipment for work, mountain and road bikes, or a bass guitar rig.
If you plan for it, you will be able to make it work with a Clubman. If you need full flexibility, add the roof rack so you can put oversize things (or bikes) ion top, OR add a receiver hitch and get a hitch bike rack.
Have your wife drive the Non-S Clubman and decide for herself if it is fast enough or not. Most Justa drivers are perfectly content with the power and 40 mpg's.

I upgraded my Clubbie order from a Justa to an S, because I felt I wanted the extra punch. That's not to say the Justa is unbearably slow, just that I like going fast.
Driving the Justa is like driving the S and not really stomping on the gas. It's not terribly or dangerously slow, and I'd still have felt comfortable passing on a 2 lane road with it, I'd just have had to downshift an extra gear to get the punch to do it. That's not to say I'd be redlining to pass someone, the gearing just means it'd be 500-1000rpm higher on the tach than I pass with my S.

I drove the Clubbie for a few days as a loaner (It was an auto S, I drive a manual justa.) and I really liked it. SkaBob nails it, driving a Justa is like driving the S a bit conservatively. I haven't driven a justa Clubbie and I imagine it is marginally heavier so maybe a bit slower, but I don't think it will feel "slow" by any means, unless your wife is a real street racer.
Of course, what you need to do now is test drive the Clubbie, that should help you decide!
If I were you, I would warranty the S and roll the dice on the Justa Clubbie for repairs. The S will likely be more expensive IF something is to go wrong with it.

Maybe your right MiniBeagle.....LOL
I'm at the dealer now waiting for the sales Mgr to put a final value on my trade after he drives it. Somehow I was a off estimating my payoff buy $2k, so I really gotta crunch the numbers.
The Tuscon has a V-6 and I know the gas savings will be a lot, but I also called Insurance rep and Clubby is $600 more per year for same coverage.
He said its in a different class and repairs/parts cost more so collision coverage costs more.
Getting ready to test drive a Justa and see how it feels....
Thanks for all the advice above.I think with a roof rack it would work fine for our needs.

I agree with Minibeagle. Get the Clubbie and be done with it. I got my 2010 non-S last summer, and have not regretted it ever. I have 2 kids (going on 11 and 6). I can jam an overloaded cart of groceries into the boot easily. It is just a matter of stacking things vertically, with heavier things on bottom, as opposed to just spreading the shopping bags out flat on the bottom af any other car trunk or rear space. If I want to go to Home Depot for landscaping supplies, no problem. I put the seats flat, and load up a few bags of mulch and several flats of flowers right in the boot. You should see the looks I get from people . . . And when we go on short vacations, I can fit 2 small suitcases in the boot side by side, standing up. (check out my gallery for a pic I took before my last trip to Disney world for the weekend.) I am totally shocked at how versatile and usable every square inch is.
For speed, although I cannot comment on the 2011, my 2010 is great. I got automatic even though I wanted stick, but i drive in sport mode all the time, using steptronic. I have a blast, and the pick up is really quite good for such a tiny engine. My last car was an Infiniti G35 (stick) which had tons of pick up, but I really do not miss it. My MINI is more than I ever expected.
Now go get that Clubbie!

$600 more for insurance? My '09 Clubman S is only about $650 a year as it is, and I have $100 deductible (State Farm).
I am aware that it depends on where you live, your driving record and how much you drive and so on, but I think you need to shop your insurance a bit!
You might also look at the new Countryman, it's available in AWD in the S and has quite a bit more room in it, but still gets great mileage and is a full on MINI.

Ok Well I DID IT
I got a good deal I think and it made sense since the payment only went up $60 a month for 60 months at .09%.
Also, I called the insurance guy and gave him the VIN.....he was way off...my rate will only go up $120 per year!
So we spent hours searching online and these manual Non-S Clubbies are like hens teeth. So we found a Chili Red, black roof/mirrors, carbon leatherette interior, with Premium package and Ipod/Bluetooth.
Oddly enough we found only one car in the south outfitted the way we wanted and it also had roof rails!! My wife will love the easy lift bike rack
Since the car is at distribution center in GA, I will be able to get it and not have the dealer touch the paint.....ie NO SWIRLS...
It will get a wash and then full clear bra treatment and I avoided the BS "First Place" finish charge of $400
All said done I paid $22,835 including floormats and out the door. (I paid for Clear bra cash xtra in adddition)
The wife was real suprised, now we have to wait a week for delivery.......
The first question she asked after she got over the shock was " Does it have the little glowing lights inside too?"
Women....
Two chili reds in the same house.......my friends will think we are nuts. At least we have piece of mind for 36 months of free warranty now.

I picked up my 2011 Cooper S Clubman two weeks ago. It's amazingly FUN to drive. I opted for Hot Chocolate Metallic paint, 17-in black alloy web spoke wheels, black bonnet stripes, black roof with rails, cold weather, premium and sport packages, and Mini Connected w/ Navigation. I admit I love the gadgets, but it's such a blast to just drive.
Congrats.
I think your wife will love the Clubman, my wife and I love ours. Plenty of room for grocery shopping and we once picked up a good sized TV entertainment stand and fit it in the Clubman. We've been a two MINI family for 5 years now.
Larry, I am cracking up at this entire thread. No point even trying to fight any of it, so good thing you just went for it. Now I am really excited to meet you guys at the Dragon, we are going to have a blast! Hurry up and register your wife and her car!!!
Also, on the safety thing, I have my new MCS as a result of my '06 getting totaled in January. The other car was a Honda SUV, and when the rescue crew showed up, one guy looked at the 2 vehicles and said "MINI 1, Honda 0!". The MINI is one tough car and my husband had me at the MINI dealership the day we got the news that El Kabong was totaled.
Maybe you two should sign up for a DE for some learning fun!

Question
My HB Clubman has the checkered accessories like Horace. I don't have the sun roof graphics. Do they help keep some of the sun out when the roofs are closed?? Thinking of getting them if they do. Car gets hot in the sun. Have sexy black interior that I love except for the heat in summer sun, ya know? Did dealer do it?
I put a Union Jack graphic on my sunroof. The sign company that made it said it reduces light transmission 25% It has thousands of tiny holes in it, I can barely see it from inside the car.
I got a 3x4' piece of black vinyl rug runner at Lowe's, it cost $7.00. It fits perfectly in the back of the Clubman and it can be rolled up when the back seats are in use. I usually keep the back seats folded down, there is a ton of room for groceries and such then.

Larry, congratulations on the Clubbie for your wife. I love mine and am always amazed at how much stuff I can get in it!
Giggles, I have a Silver Jack perforated sunroof graphic from CooperFlags. Very pleased with it overall and it does seem to help with the heat in the car. Cost was $160 and then it was about $60 to have it installed at a vehicle sign company. I've had it on the vehicle for 2.5 years now and it's holding up just fine.

Annette,
We are really looking forward to the Dragon as meeting up as well....can't wait.
She is going to leave her car home this time. We have a 3.5 hour drive out there and back and we just want to spend a lot of time together (no kiddies
) and enjoy the HK stereo and each other.
However the thought did cross my mind to drive separate so that the clubby can haul all the Beer and the "S" can focus on haulin A$$...LOL
But, I'll let my honey ride with me. Not to mention with over 500 Minis in Fontana I believe there is gonna be quite a bit of congestion and also more risk of something going amiss. One MINI is enough to worry about..
As far as a DE, we went to VIR last week for a charity lap day and I spent 50 minutes in the Cooper stuck to the bumoper of a Porsche Boxter. I had a blast. I have been driving fast cars an motorcycles my whole life and have quite a bit of experience.....not to mention I drive a police cruiser 11 hours a day. Working in a city of 300K means I probably hit lights and sirens and 2x the posted speed about 5 times a night....in heavy traffic, on small city streets and in a Crown Vic with 100K Miles
I do want to go back to VIR and have some more fun and learn a thing or two. My wife is a conservative driver and enjoys the pride in ownership. She is keeping her car clean and void of any stripes until after the Dragon.
I have a feeling after she sees all the other "girl" Coopers the budget for mods to MY car will drop by 50%
I just had Grassroots Garage install a Hotchkiss sway bar and do my first oil change this morning. My Redline shift boots arrived and I need to install them later tonight.
We are gearing up for a Tarheel Mini Club drive Saturday

We are really looking forward to the Dragon as meeting up as well....can't wait.

We went from a 2007 MCS to a 2009 MCC, and have loved the Clubman; not a single complaint in the first 28,000 miles. The MCC is not a powerhouse, but is quite adequate. It does require more downshifting in mountains, but we do know how to downshift
Now we have a 2011 MCS on order. The Mellow Yellow MCC will be my wife's grandkid-hauler, and the Chili MCS will be my playmate. I am eager to see them side-by-side in the garage. I am thinking two Chilis side-by-side would be just as nice to behold
Congratulations!
