Missed a shift and hit about 6500 rpm in my JCW 09 mini!! HELP

I missed a shift in my mini from 2nd to 3rd, it revved up to about 6000 or 6500 RPMs then the idle acted weird and started going up and down then a half yellow half black engine light came on under RPM gauge. I pulled in to a parking lot and it was still idling up and down at about 1000 up to 1500 RPMs. So I shut it off and let it sit for about 15 min. then started it and it ran fine, but had the yellow engine light under the speedo on. has anyone heard of this or know what happened? Thanks for any help.

You just might have gone over 6500 rpm, which is probably the overspeed lmit setting on the R56 S. The CEL is probably a logged overspeed code. Hopefully the overspeed didn't get too wild for the sake of keeping your engine in one piece over the long haul. Either way, you need to find out what the code is. The ECU might be telling you a different story.

Keep your eye on it

If the Light does not go out after five restarts you may need a trip to your dealer to get the code turned off. I'm guessing that no damage was done due to the rev limiter.

You have to drive the car between restarts. Just sitting and restatrting will not do it.

I hope this works for you.

That's a good point. The rev limiter should have cut fuel before you did damage. If you would have downshifted to the wrong gear nothing would have saved you from overspeed! No go and check that code!

On your shift to third, did you happen to put it into first and overspeed the engine that way, or just not actually get into gear and apply gas too 'vigorously' and it over speeded that way?

The first (selecting too low a gear) and nothing will protect the engine except pushing the clutch back in very fast. The second and the gas should shut off before you get to 'ludicrous speed' and do damage.

Im not to sure. I have a feeling it is something to do with it getting to hot, just loosened up a valve on the motor and they tightened it up and it is fine now.

We may all be thinking "valve" as in intake or exhaust but maybe the OP is talking about some other kind of valve that can come loose or is using the word valve in place of a more appropriate term.

I'm not a member of the R56 society as you can see or really have much knowledge about this particular thread's issue but I do have to give you a huge thumbs up for doing what practically nobody does anymore. That is, do a search, find a similar issue to the one you are having and then ply the crowd for input. Well Done!! Hope you get some good answers to your question. (And I'm not being facetious).

"facetious"... Good word. I'm more of a "flippant" guy but we is who we is....

Before the tune, I hit the rev limiter a few times and have never had a problem. Now with the tune, I have hit 7500 RPM's (didn't mean to) with no cut-out.

So if the half-filled engine light ever comes on, it usually clears from five drive cycles?
