R55 MPG on 2009 Clubman automatic
MPG on 2009 Clubman automatic
Hello,
Can anyone tell me what MPG I should expect on my 2009 Clubman S with automatic Transmission? I seem to be getting an average of about 20/21 MPG. That seems low to me. Any thoughts?

Mine averages 27.5 in mixed usage driving, mine is an '09 automatic too, with just under 30K on it.
When I'm on long trip it gets as high as 34, but only if I'm doing 65. If I'm cruising 70-75 it's more like 30.
If I drove in nothing but city stop and go, I'll bet it would be a lot lower, especially in really cold or hot conditions like we have here in the midwest.
To the OP, instead of reading the trip computer, calculate it with pencil and paper for the next few tankfuls, that way you'll get a much more realistic picture.
So much of fuel mileage depends on driving conditions and the driver, that's why all of the car commercials say YMMV.....cause it will! Don't forget to check your tire pressures - they can have a marked effect on fuel mileage too, as well as that 500lbs of junk you're carrying in the trunk!

27MPG sounds more like it. I'm an average driver, hardly ever use sport mode, premium gas and correct tire pressure. Not sure what's going on. Guess i'll make an appointment to take it in for a diagnoses.
Well, I guess you guys are really getting good gas mileage. I'm running my car in Sport Mode, Tiptronic Mode, not over reving, perfect tire pressure, and the only thing is that I have the spare tire that I purchased extra.
I might have to take it in to check I guess. I do have 18 inch tires but don't think thats the problem.

I average 26 - 27 in mixed driving(with most being short running-errand type of trips ). I average about 32 - 33 highway keeping it under 80.

2011 Clubbie S, auto trans, I have averaged 26.3 mpg over 11 fill-ups with mixed driving. Highest has been 30.6 (lots of highway driving), lowest 21.0 (mostly surface streets in Sport mode). Fuelly.com is great for tracking this stuff!
I have a 2010 Clubman automatic and I average 28 mpg . . . I drive in sport mode all the time, and my daily driving is a combo of highway/city. I keep tire pressure at 36 lbs and check it every month. And I only use premium fuel, 93 octane.

Have a 2010 Clubman S auto and get between 27-29 mpg on mix of city and highway (93 octane fuel only). I did notice a slight drop in mpg during the winter, especially in snow, but nothing like 20mpg. I'd have it checked.
2009 Clubman S w/ auto, 17" wheels.
I typically get around 28-30 with mixed driving. Since the last reset though, about 500 miles, I have averaged about 31.5 but I have really been taking it easy to see how good I can get the mileage. That is about half on back roads (avg 40 mph and no stoplights) and about half highway. Once I get on the highway I can't seem to keep it below 75-80. So it is possible to get decent mileage though it is much too easy to play hard in the car and the mileage will drop like a rock.

I have a 2009 Clubman S with the automatic trans. During the summer I was getting 33.5 and it dropped to 31.1 during the winter months. I don't drive it hard but I don't baby it either. I also just pulled the run flats and put on a set of Firestones. They aren't the greatest handling tire but they are smooth/quiet and that's what I wanted.
'09 S auto, 29.5 MPG - mostly h/w driving. What's interesting is I've noticed about 0.5 MPG drop compared with year ago, which I attrubute to lower quality/higher ethanol content gas now sold here. Even had one check engine & trip to service because of it... as per dealer, at least.
where in the country do you live? if you are in a continuous winter climate, then your fuel econ is going to be worse thanks to the ecu running the car rich and to "winter gas" that has less energy.
I know this was an Auto thread - but I would not expect the transmission to make that much of a difference.
I'm in a JCW. 11k miles; and the worst I've had was 27mpg; and this includes a lot of spirited driving in sport mode.
Highway I average 31 because it is hard to keep it under 80. If I keep it to 70 - the computer shows about 3-4 mpg improvement (36 - but knock off 2mpg for an overly optomistic computer
20 - 21 sounds way low... something is not right - escpecially for a 2009 (no break-in issue). Are you sure your right foot isn't perpetually planted???
Also - if you can muster it - try the 'start/stop' thing (standard feature in Europe). Even the manual says any idle time over 4 seconds - and you are saving gas by shutting off the engine & starting again when needed. (DI engines don't need to flood on start-up)
