How to remove the rear view mirror

I want to add a auto dimming mirror. Does anyone know how I take it off? First I want to check to see if its pre wired. Does anyone know?

I added the autodimming mirror with homelink last week. Twist the mirror 90 degrees right or left and the mirror will come off the stud on the headliner. The back housing around the stem comes apart in two peices and you can then unplug the cable from the mirror. The mirror is prewired for autodimming.

I dug around for 15 minutes and couldnt find a place to plug one in on my 2002 Cooper S. There was a module that said 315mhz bolted up there, what is that, the alarm?

The 315Mhz has something to do with the keyless remote. If you purchase a new mirror from Classic MINI it will have a 315MHz module in the new mirror already. I sold my manual dip mirror for $90 on the Marketplace.

The new Autodimming mirror with Homelink cost me $345 from Classic MINI.

By the way, those part numbers are for a MINI Coopers S Build date Feb. 2006

Yeah I was actually surprised it sold for so much. It helps take the bite out of the upgrade cost for sure.

I have a March '05 built Cooper S. How do I know if I already have the 315 MHZ or if I need it? They are two separate mirrors:

This is an upgrade I want to do too!

The two mirrors are auto dip, but one has Homelink the other doesn't. I have a Feb 06 build and used the part 51169134363. I was able to get this mirror from Classic MINI in OH for $345. Your car is prewired for the autodip mirrors, just chose either the mirror with homelink or the other without. The 315Mhz is built into both mirrors already.

If buying a mirror off of Ebay, how would I tell if it's auto dimming/dipping or not? Aside from their description of course.

Don't quote me however I think you will see a photo cell (small black dot) in the center of the lower part of the mirror.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread - but - I plan on removing the Stock mirror on my wife's 2012 Countryman to replace it with a rearview mirror with a monitor for a rear camera -(yes, I know, why - My wife wants it). The information about the 315MHz module in the mirror concerns me. Is this module for the remote entry system? In which case the rearview mirror replacement is out of the question.

TIA
Michael

All4mini, you're asking in a 1st gen thread, FYI.

Sorry to renew this thread folks. I have a 2006 MCS and just received a replacement auto-dim/UGDO mirror from vendor. My wife's car has its auto-dim feature went out with a big stain in the middle of the mirror. My question is, will the factory remote work after the plug and play swap? Or do I need to program the remote? Thanks for any help provided.

It is a simply plug and play no reprogramming required!

Thank you for such quick response. It's interesting that I found the replacement unit design is slightly different even the size and buttons are all the same. There's an additional hole on the back casing (not the light sensor hole). It appears to be serving as ventilation for internal components? There's nothing in there and I could see the mirror when shining a flashlight into the hole. Has anyone noticed or encountered this? I hope I'm getting the correct part, but not one for new MINI.
