R50/53 Changing R53 JCW intake to Alta CAI
Changing R53 JCW intake to Alta CAI
Hi, I was wondering if any of you out there have been in this same situation- and if you have any pearls of wisdom. I have looked around NAM and still haven't found the exact answers I'm looking for.
I have a 2005 R53 MCS (right hand drive, Australia) that I bought with a JCW intake on it- I tried installing an Alta CAI on it today, to find that the installation instructions didn't make sense in my situation! My JCW top air box has wires coming out of it that I didn't expect to see.. any suggestions?
Pictures are below:
1. The connection at the top air box, with wiring coming out to:
2. Box A (in red), which connects to the fuse box:
3. Red wire (finger pointing to it)
My questions are:
Given that I've read that the JCW intake is a top and bottom box set, do I need to remove both and put the Alta CAI onto a stock bottom box?
Is it ok to just remove all the wiring associated with the JCW intake, including the grounding wire?
Will a JCW strut brace fit again on top of the Alta CAI (without a box lid), or does it have to be cut into?
Thanks in advance.

The top half of your JCW intake needs to be removed; you retain the bottom half. You can remove all the wiring associated with the flap electronics. Make sure you cap off the vacuum line as well. And no the strut bar will not fit without trimming the alta sheetmetal.
Thanks for that info- I have since done some reading and realised that I have to remove the yellow wire from the 'white/red' wire after it was spliced originally, plus remove the red wire from the fuse box. However, what do you mean by capping off the vacuum line?? My Alta CAI came with this spiggot that I'm not sure how to use... Also, you mean you can use the JCW bottom rather than the stock bottom?

You have to put a small cap on the line or you will have a leak.
Also tie the line out of the way so it does not accidentally get pulled off later on.
You will only gain sound, not HP from this swap of intakes.
I'm not sure where I'm meant to cap it.. at the red line, blue line or yellow line? this was all I could find. Does the Alta CAI even use the vacuum unit?
