I am contemplating New Rims and Tires. I love the way the Mini looks when the tires protrude a little for a wider stance.

My question is about Offset. I am a little confused about what the offset number represents. Is a bigger offset (Higher Number) widen the stance or is it the opposite?

My second question is about wheel spacers. I currently have 17" Web Spokes and like them, but I want a wider stance. Would this be a better option rather then buying rims. Also how wide could I go? I don't plan on lowering my MCS, so ride height is not an issue.

In short, bigger off-set means the wheel is closer to the suspension components.

Take a look at this graphic calculator and play around with the ET setting to see how that affects clearances for fenders, suspension components, etc.

Going to spacers usually means longer bolts to ensure proper thread engagement. For an R56, these can be hard to find. I've switched to studs to avoid complications. Also, my local Discount Tire shop will not re-install wheel spacers. This can be a problem if you use a DT for tire rotations, flat repair, etc.

 

Yes the lower the offset number the wider the stance will be. I think that I read that the a wider stance can create problems with the shock towers. There is term for it that I can not remember, but, there are braces that bolt onto the tower to reinforce the strength if you go wide.

 

There are threads for this (8 inch wide wheel thread for example). There may some issues from widening the stance too far such as "mushrooming" of the shock towers. There is alot of talk about that too in NAM in several threads. Another thing to look out for would be if you widen far enough the tire may come in contact with the plastic wheel surround. Some have cut away the plastic to accommodate the wider stance. May also depend on the cars ride height though and camber. So a few things to add to the topic. Hope this is helpful.
