Cabin Filter Install

Does anyone know how to open the "door" under the glove box to remove the old cabin filter and install a new one? Any help would be appreciated.

They are just 2 tabs, if you reach back there you can feel them. Just pull them back until the unsnap, then pull the old filter out and put the new one in. It is very easy to change.

Good reference but, the 1st gen and 2nd gen are a little different. The major difference revolves around the filter itself.

I know nothing about the Gen1 MINIs, but my '08 R56 has the same arrangement as in the pictures in that post. No fasteners or screws holding the door - just a good yank (or two!) on the front edge of the filter housing directly behind the glovebox, and it popped right open (hinged at the back). Old filter out, new one in and pop it closed - done!

BTW - for my fellow Canadian MINI readers - MINI dealer wanted $68 for a new cabin air filter . Canadian Tire and Parts Source both have them, you'll probably have to ordered it (got mine in 2 days). $24 for the "plain" filter, $33 for the "Carbon" version (that's what I got).

P/N: 023-3856-2 (plain)
P/N: 023-3850-4 (carbon)

Always good to save a few bucks!

Seems most suggestions are to pull the flap at the top. I can't imagine how anyone can get fingers up there to pull the flap. As I mentioned in another post, there are four square holes in the front of the filter box. Put a screwdriver in the hole, push forward and down. Do this for each of thefour and the door drops open. No scraped or cut fingers.

re: the screwdriver method...

Why do something the easy way when brute force can accomplish the same thing?

As for scraped & cut fingers... that's what band-aids are for.

On second thought - I'll try it your way next time.

ps - I have a '69 MGB and have owned many old crocks and other British cars over the years. So whacking things with hammers and using pry bars and cutting torches to remove stubborn parts are just the natural way to fix a car to me. The job isn't done right if there isn't just a little blood involved!

there is some up and down about the filter

did it change or did it not?

The original GEN1 filter had a plastic frame and the GEN2 did not. For a time the parts suppliers had just one part number, well two, one for carbon and one for without, but the suggestion was to use the frameless GEN2 filter in the GEN1.

It WILL work. I've found it a BIT more difficult to install ... in a GEN1

The filter in the 2nd gen is different. It is smaller plus does not have the plastic like the one in the link it is all filter with cotton on the sides in the 2nd gen.

The 2nd gen filter is smaller??

The one from my '08 seems huge - hard to believe it fits under the dash!

It does look as described though - no plastic frame, just a cottony - felt looking fuzzy stuff on the sides.
