Checking oil, dip stick

I just got my 07 mcs a couple of months ago and the only complaint I have is when checking the oil I have trouble reading the dip stick because it is a spring and I can't see the oil that well on it. Anyone else have this problem?

You're def not the only one. I try and clean it off as best as I can and take a couple readings.

Yes, absolutely bizarre design - y'know, BMW, that little flat piece of metal has worked really well for decades...

The link doesn't work.

Synthetic oil is sometimes hard to see as it stays clean longer. I make sure I wipe off the stick really well, dip it and then hold it in the light so I can see the reflection of the wet oil on the stick. The level will be evident.

Here's what I do. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean on a paper towel. Re-insert, pull out and lay it back onto a clean portion of the paper towel. It's easy to see the oil on the paper towel, and therefore, where it is on the dipstick.

How long did it take you guys oil to change from clear to the regular dark color? I ask because usually when I change my oil is stays relatively clear for the first 1000 miles, but when the dealer supposedly changed my oil it seemed to be dark the first time I checked it. Makes me wonder if they actually changed my oil.

I agree with everyone else. It has to be the dumbest dipstick design I've ever come across. Where did that red one come from?

+1 Did not seem too difficult for me to read. I guess just on the stick it is a little challenging, but while you need a rag to give it a fresh wipe, why not just lay the stick on it and a slight roll will give a good imprint of the oil level.

I too dislike the dipsick design, but at least we still have a dipstick at all- my last BMW didn't.
