Note which category it's in......Classic Minis

I would like some more info on this box, the ad says it's a prototype, does that mean it doesn't work? It's noisey? No synchros? Does the diff come with it, and what ratio gears are in it if so. Is 5th 1:1 or an overdrive?

The transmission was built 15 or so years ago by MiniSpares in the UK. We acquired it at the time as a "display only" type sample for this product : http://www.minimania.com/web/Item/MSG4/InvDetail.cfm
We have never attempted to confirm if this sample can be made to work or not. 5th gear is indeed an overdrive. Gearbox is as pictured with no differential included but does accept a stock version.
The 'rareness' of the box is simply how very few have been sold in the USA and the fact that production in the UK is very sketchy.

At $5500 I can see why they'd be rare all right.

I think you answered all my questions, obliquely - but clearly.

Display only. Got it.....

I think that means that replacement parts are non-existent

I have had one of the Minispares 5-speed gearboxes fitted in my Classic Mini for the past 15 years with no problems , although my annual mileage is now quite low and it is not driven in winter months.
