I'm in an area where the HD radio is killing my radio experience...
It'll try to synch-up only to last for a few seconds, and then back to normal radio.
Is there a way to "turn off" HD receiving when I'm in remote areas?

There is! As I just installed the HD in my car this weekend. On the radio, there is a softkey called SET. When you go in there, you should see two choices with checkboxes, RDS and HD. Uncheck HD.

 

Was that with the normal headunit?

After searching through the options list of my integrated MINI-Nav unit, I found it:
Set-up --> rotate to Info Sources --> click down to Audio --> rotate to HD Radio --> ON / OFF

How does HD radio work, overall? I've never used it...
