R52 Lubrication of Convertible Sunroof Mechanism
Lubrication of Convertible Sunroof Mechanism
Does anyone regularly lubricate the sliding track for the sunroof/convertible top? This issue came up at the dealer relative to my impending convertible top failure discussed in another thread. Apparently, the dealer service does not have any instruction to lubricate these sliding surfaces. While inspecting these parts to diagnose a broken plastic sliding shoe, I noticed all surfaces were dirty and dry. Significant wear was noticed on the plastic sliding shoes.
Shouldn't these tracks be regularly cleaned and lubricated? It would save wear and probably reduce drag on the motor. Access is easy. Just remove one screw and plastic cover comes off for ready access.
What would you use? White lithium grease?

I've used white Lithium grease on those rails. One of these days in the far far future, I will have to dig into the motors and other joints/knuckles and lube them too.
Yeah, it's stupid that Mini doesn't have a maintenance instructions for the convertible top mechanisms but tells you to lube the door and trunk hinges.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but here's a good guide for convertible top mechanism lubrication:
