Newman cam??

Has anyone installed a Newman cam in their R50? My dad is looking for a bit more low to mid range power and the Newman 260/396 cam says it has "Good Increase of Low Mid Range Power Smooth Idle For Non Supercharged Engine"

Just wondering how much of a difference this would make in the R50....

Performance cams in NA motors are great!

and really, for pretty much all the cams out there for the MINI, they can all be run on both the cooper and the cooper s. Drag cams for blown motors have overlap that isn't good for N/A motors, but I have yet to see a cam for the Tritec MINI that is designed this way. Reason is that a lot of the time cams have to idle and run at part throttle, when the car is off boost. A true
"blower cam" would have problems with both of these issue.

Best way to go is to really think about how your dad drives his car. Choose any of the cams that are offered that are optimized for that RPM range and he'll be happy.

If you are new to the world of camshafts, talk to your mechanic about thier experience and use reccomendations.

My dad is 73. He doesn't redline the car, usually shifts by 5k rpm, but he'd like more oomph, particularly off the line.

There is no such camshaft on the market that will gain midrange on the R50, i higly suggest you stay with the stock camshaft.

what do you define as mid range? there are cooper owners out there who are happily driving with cams.

Good question, for me midrange is 2500 to 4500, and this range is the weak spot of the R50 engine, especially the 2500 to 3500, it's a flat spot there.

It's on Newmans website...

They list 4 cams for the Tritec MINI.

Well, I don't know, that's why I was asking for opinions from people who might have one. I see you have a Newman in your signiture. Is your car an R50?

No. You used to be able to, but Newman doesn't want to kill it's vendors--so in the U.S., it's RMW and it's distributors. You can buy it from other vendors accross the pond and have it shipped here, but that's the only way you'd be able to get a new one other than from RMW.

Where's the oomph

Hi Davis,
I am new to Minis but I was reading your thread and the question that came to mind for me was what RPM is your dad at off-the-line where you stated he wants more power?

The Newman cam which you are referring to is the PH1 cam and they state an RPM range of 2000-6500 RPM. I asked if NickBMW, in his cam thread, if he has a torque curve with and without the Newman PH1 and if we could see it. If we have the curves and we know what RPM your dad comes off the line we should have your answer. The most oomph will always be where the torque is the highest so if the torque is increased at the RPM your dad has as the target he will get an improvement. If the cam shifts the torque peak and by doing so the torque (despite being overall higher) is lower at the RPM range he is looking for then he will not be happy.

Hope that helps
