Is there any technical reason why a stock or aftermarket MCS exhaust can't be used on an MC other than the rear bumber cover?
Thanks,
Chris

Here are some considerations.

The bottom of MC and MCS are similar but under the rear boot areas is quite different as in the MCS there is a battery and it's large container while in the MC there is the spare tire and a lack of hanger hardware for the MCS exhaust.

For the MC you'd need to add the hanger hardware, loose the spare tire and anything else in the way, replace the rear bumper with an MCS bumper or at least the valance trim or cut it somehow.

Just think what you are doing to the MC. You are adding weight-perhaps 20 pounds or more albeit balanced over the rear. You have a normally aspirated engine, limited intakes to choose from, and stock header that would limit the benefits of the MCS exhaust design. So in the end if you did it and dynoed it I might venture to speculate that the total benefit in HP or torque might not be better than something like the single Helix cat-back exhaust for the MC (which costs much less and weighs less than an MCS dual system). Looks are quite a different matter. Your choice.

By the way, us MINI owners in HI were discussing this very thing in great detail and crawled under to take a look at both MC and MCS at the dealer showroom.

There's also backpressure to consider. Will there be enough with the MCS system to allow the motor to run right?

*kahrhoff: I just got the Helix 13 installed on my MC a week ago today & I love it!! However, I cannot compare it to the other aftermarkets (Borla, etc.) as I've not heard those systems. The Helix 13 sounds great (a low, pretty loud rumble) & I'd say that the performance has risen considerably ("considerably" is relative here as we're not talking about a Ferrari). Enjoy the process, kahrhoff

For MCS owners there already are a few single muffler choices that work fine:
Quicksilver
Alta sport
NRP

But the single design, even with a larger 2.5" pipe diameter (max for MCS) is still more restrictive than a double muffler design like Magnaflow, UUC, Milltek, or Borla street. To get the most out of the other mods like the pulley, header, and ECU upgrades you need a less restrictive exhaust system.

But why not run a stock Cooper exhaust on an S? Sure, you'd probably have to throw a bend in there to make it fit (I'm assuming), but it would cetainly be free-er flowing than the ridiculous spaghetti that we have now!

While techically it might be possible to do it the results might not be so positive depending on the diameter of the stock MC exhaust-might be less in diameter by .25 to 0.5" plus the muffler design itself and the different backpressure of the system given the more powerful MCS engine. Also when using a side muffler you'd need to replace the rear bumper on the MCS or cut the valence to get the straight pipe out to the side. Alternatively as you mentioned, you'll need to add two more bends to get the tailpipe to the center. The other aspect is balance- it's tough to design the weight balance needed to hang the single muffler and get the center tailpipes to hang without being crooked.

The "best" free flowing design is to get the straight center exhaust pipe with 2.5" diameter and bring it back centerline to a less restrictive straight muffler and end with a big ole tailpipe. Gotta loose the battery box or cut a groove through the center of it (use a smaller battery that would replace the stock one). All this has been done before.

Wait! Aren't we supposed to be discussing an MCS exhaust on an MC???
Oops!

This is what I love about this board. topics always run off course. Anyway, my plan is to make my soon to arrive MC look from the exterior to be an MCS. So what I was thinking was that when I put the rear bumper cover on I better put on an exhaust that would come out the cener of the back. And realizing all of the people that do aftermarket exhausts on their MCS, I figured there would be plenty out there.

Chris,
To make an MC look like an MCS from the outside-this is what someone did where I live.
He bought an MC very early in 2002 and there were no MCS at the time. To get his MC looking the part he installed the S side markers, aero kit sideskirts and painted the wheelarches and the whole MINI Dark silver (an MCS only color) but the front and rear bumpers were left stock (as is the exhaust). Wheels are 5 spoke.

So when you look from afar it is Dark silver and has S side markers but wait-no bonnet scope and a rear side exhaust.

So now go run out and paint your MC electric blue and make some people confused.

I like that idea minihune. What I have planned is more along the lines of Carbon Fiber hood painted with aero side skirts and replacement front and rear bumpers, new exhaust and rear spoiler, and new side grills. and gas cap What am I forgetting?

You're forgetting the wheels! But don't bother with the S-lytes they are too heavy. If you want to stay stock you can do one of two things.
1. Go for the 16" one piece cross spoked R90 rims-they look nice and few MINIs have them, and less expensive with less costly tires that work just fine and they weight less than the 17" wheels.
2. Wait a little longer until the spring of 2004 and then get one of the new MINI rims from Classic Auto Campus- maybe the R91 5 spoke or R92 seven spoke design- very new looking. Just check to see if any of those go on the new MCS and that would be a great MCS look alike.

OR don't wait and go custom on the wheels sooner.

When you paint the CF bonnet you can leave a stripe or two unpainted (you can see the CF pattern).

Hm... with the extra money you are spending to make the MC look like the MCS, you could just get an MCS...

Just a thought ;D

Buy an MCS? Nope, that would be "too easy". Some people need to have the fun of making the conversion.
Think of it as a hobby project.

Just like those who take the time and effort to build their own home or own furniture. Can't you just go out a buy it like everyone else? Sure, but where is the fun?

Anyway we each have our own way of tackling problems and finding solutions. Enjoy the process.

Issues involving hangers, more bends, modifying tool storage, back pressures, etc.
I haven't ruled out a side pipe (yes, really!) or a straight pipe, no muffler, with a SuperTrapp exhaust

^^I almost forgot...the reason why I was considering an MCS exhaust on my MC, I got rear ended several weeks ago which requires a new rear bumper cover. I just thought a MCS rear bumper cover and exhaust would add a little "uniqueness" to my MC.

Now, back to our normal program....
