DDM Intake with a twist

I decided my little 04 Cooper needed a little growl and went with the DDM intake after looking at online reviews. I noticed that this intake, like others, leaves the old OEM air intake unconnected and uselessly pumping air into the engine compartment. By trimming an 1" off the old air hose above the radiator I was able to route it directly into the airbox (see pic). I am gonna get some Ramair stickers now The sound above 4K rpm is pretty amazing.

This is the same setup I have and I LOVE IT!!! I don't know about power, but the growl is amazing! Way at WayMotorWorks did mine about 1.5 years ago at Mickey & Mini in Orlando and I've been smiling ever since!

ulrichd,
That looks very interesting. Would you take a picture from a bit further back?

Thanks. I just realized that this was in the non S section. No wonder I couldn't understand the picture. Duh on my part.

I just installed my aFe intake and the heatshield is built as such where that tube actually funnels into the new box area without cutting or anything of the sort! Thought I would share that! But the ingenuity on your DDM is great man.

You may have been looking at someone that incorrectly installed the intake to have the air not blowing on the filter. The way you did it is how we always install it. That was a big part of the design to have the air blow directly on the filter. Removing the plastic intake muffler is a PITA so alot of people cut it too. Just some FYI

May i ask why you didn't design a real enclosed CAI?

Probably the development cost. I don't know what it looks like under the filter, but things like adding a properly radiused "ram" or fluted pipe to the end of the throttle body can increase airflow too. It's one of those diminishing returns things though... there's only so much space there and how much money do you want to invest on fiddling with an intake when you can probably get a decent increase by removing the OEM stuff and putting a shield around the new foam filter?

I've read a lot of trouble with the resonator and such. I was swapping out my radiator, rad fan, and removed the broken up MFE (plastic thing holding everything together) and Removed the resonator while I was at it since I'm overhauling my mini trying to restore and clean everything (coolant, axle grease, power steering fluids everywhere). I guess sometimes the long way is the short way. Service mode & the mfe extender screws to remove the resonator w/o cutting things...
