Help with brake change

Hello,
I'm new to the forum I have a 2003 Mini S model and I am hooked I really like the car and hope to have it a long time. But right now I'm having a slight problem. I want to change my brakes and rotors. I got the left rear rotor changed but I can't get the piston to go down so I can get my brake pads on so I can complete the job. I never had this problem on other cars . Can someone help me with this?

Did you remember to release the emergency brake? I did that once... Secondly are you using a brake tool to compress the piston that rotates? This is important for resetting the rear brakes. I bought a whole kit from Harbor Freight for $20.

Yep, you definitely need the brake tool for the rear brakes. You'll never get it down any other way.

The piston needs to be turned as it is compressed. Others here have reported doing it without the tool, but it sounds like the tool makes it easier.

Tool definitely makes it easier, but I've done it without the tool - by using needle-nosed pliers in two of the piston holes to rotate it clockwise while pushing on it hard. You can eventually get it to retract using that technique.
